I see people using the term "QQ" a lot around these parts, and while I know it has something do with complaining, I'm really not quite sure what it actually means. Could someone clarify?

Thanks for the answers. I thought it might be the eyes thing, but the WCII thing is interesting if true (I don't have a gorram clue if it IS, though)

Not true.  Myth.  It means "quit." Started back in Warcraft where ALT QQ would basically do what ALT F4 does.

And then some idiot came along and thought it would be cool to use it as crying.

Well, it does almost look like crying. The other alternative is this. T_T or T^T

It is from Warcraft 2.  Ask any old guy who actually played the game.

Excerpt from in-game chat.
quinbye: wild how language evolves isn't it?
TQuin:   yeah
TQuin:   you've heard people say QQ?
quinbye: yes
quinbye: what is QQ
quinbye: I thought they were referring to you and me
quinbye: hah
quinbye: or saying "Quit, quit!"
TQuin:   in 1996, Warcraft 2 was one of the first widely online games. the keyboard shortcut for quitting a match was Alt+Q. If you held alt and pressed Q twice, you would exit the game
TQuin:   well, so yes, it literally meant quit quit
TQuin:   BUT
TQuin:   little asian children at the time were coming up with silly ideas about using english letters to make things that look like faces such as this stupid thing U__U
TQuin:   well, so a popular thing to say to an opponent in Warcraft 2 was QQ, as in to a person who is beating you badly indicating that you were going to quit or to a person you were beating badly as a suggestion that they were losing so badly that they should just quit
TQuin:   here's where it gets stupid
TQuin:   some little asian children misunderstood and decided that QQ obviously must be a pair of big eyes crying
quinbye: that seems poetic
TQuin:   this became more and more commonly used until it eventually caught on mainstream and started being used on the faces of illustrated and animated characters
TQuin:   in keeping with being a bunch of mouthbreathing, neckbearded goof balls, this was quickly adopted by the next generation of internet goobers who, coincidentally, never played Warcraft 2 because they were too young at the time
TQuin:   so now, the internet world thinks that QQ is symbolic of a pair of crying eyes, when in reality it is a direct predecessor to a newer internet phrase ragequit, meaning to get so fed up that you quit the game out of frustration
TQuin:   a more direct translation for World of Tanks would be to suggest that a person AltF4. if a person says QQ in this game, it's likely that they don't get out much, spend WAY too much time on the internet, are a virgin in all probability, have no friends, and are broadly disliked by everyone

It is an emoticon, and it was originally lowercase:

qq

You guys are all wrong it means quick quid, quid being a type of sea crature with no bones that shoots natural glitter to bedazzle its enemies. They are very popular pets in kuzahkstan. Quick describing the speed at which they reproduce, which to the disappointment of the female quid,  they always let's out a sigh of dissatisfaction, hence the player is saying you complain too much about things that aren't under your control.

God you guys don't know anything!!

Interesting that so many people interpret this expression as crying, but it's wrong.

i played warcraft 2, just never through LAN and by the time the battle.net edition came out there were better things out there.. like broodwars! :D

i have always used QQ as "cry moar noob"

you warcraft purists can wave your relic flag all you want, but times have changed, such is the nature with language.

It's originally from WC II, which I was unaware of because I never ragequit from a LAN game. ;)

I treat it as crying eyes, because using (stupid) slang that was topical 15 years ago and getting your panties in a bunch because it's transitioned to a more intuitive emoticon is... well, silly.

As I understand it, as a term for "ragequit" it didn't get popular until WC II came to Battle.net in '99 or '00.  Did anyone actually use text chat in LAN games?

Maybe I'll start tossing out "DYWYPI?" after kills.

It's not any more wrong than saying "Band Aid" when you have a generic CVS version instead of "Adhesive Bandage"

QQ really does mean "cry more" - even in WC2, which I played and enjoyed, it was used to tell people to quit. First as a joke, and later as provocation. Personally I think it's a great response for anyone who starts a flame fest after they die. Brief and to the point!
