The Leopard

What is your opinion of this light tank?

I stopped hating it the moment I stopped trying to get the scout medal.

I still prefer the VK2801 I got recently because it is made of pure awesome. Great flanking tank as long as your enemies assume you're not going suiscout. If you're slow or at a stop they'll ignore you over priority targets.

I try not to suiscout (doesn't always work, lol)...its fun sprinting behind the enemy lines and making them commit 4 or 5 other lights and fast mediums to try and hunt me down while I sniff out their Arty.  :Smile-playing:

...I'm not sure what the best speed for a "Leo" is, but on flat ground I had it up to 65 km/h. I was impressed!

...besides I got the scout medal twice in my Pz II.  ;)

it's a great tank, but keeps getting put in crappy battles.

suiscouting will not get you anywhere... it may give you a scout medal (that is, if you win), but won't do anything for your team.  a scout is more effective during the middle and last part of the battle, where it can tell the rest of the team where the enemy tanks are, or aren't.  this tank can rush to a spot on the map with good cover, and with camo net+binos, can spot for arty or tanks with bigger guns.  just remember, though, that the leopard's 50mm gun is basically for self-defense.

if i get spotted, or when an enemy gets too close, i use auto-aim, and run like hell.  hopefully, my teammates have my back, and get that tango for me while i try to survive. the sloped armor on it is pretty decent at bouncing some shots, so you can probably live to fight on another piece of the map :D

in the rare event that you get into lower-tier battles, though, it plays somewhat like a mini-panther, with a decent, accurate gun, and excellent mobility.

BUT... this tank's spot in my garage is being threatened by the french lights... i'll see if it still deserves a place in my garage after i get the AMX 13-90

Passive scouting FTW. 100% crew, camo net, binocs, vents and 70% camo gets you this:

I just got mine upgraded fully.

It burns a ton of momentum on turning.  The gun is small too honestly, it'll penetrate fairly significantly though.
The top speed means you can really make some long scouting passes laterally and escape.

The problem is a lot of people run toward enemy land and then turn when they see enemies.  This exposes you massively because not only do they likely see you, but then when you turn you're going FURTHER into their area AND burning off momentum!  So you're getting closer to the enemy, showing them your sides and rear, and slowing down.  Practically asking to get blown up.

A lateral scouting pass instead is when you move toward enemy lines, then turn east or west continuing perpendicular to the direction your team is advancing.  Then you continue and hopefully spot an enemy and turn back toward your team.
You can then either continue making passes (like if you saw no enemies and ran out of room) or change scouting direction.
ie counterclockwise then clockwise and such.

The leo strikes me as one that would be good for either passive or shallow scouting because of its turning radius and speed issues.
The only ones I've really seen "good" at straight on rushing in are the Russian ones because their vision is poor and they lose less on turning, have weaker turning, but higher speed.

Though the leo's armor does make it more suitable to charge past enemy lines.

So I'm thinking German and US tanks make better shallow scouts and passive scouts due to speed issues where US lights are slow, and German scouts burn off momentum fast.

I also kind of like the gun on the Leo.  It's not the fat howitzer the M5 has, but it's an accurate little pop gun.
I'll someday get coated optics for mine and probably keep it.   I probably prefer my M5 more, but this isn't a bad tank.

I just rebought mine the second time, and after a few games i am already starting to feel frustrated.
I have Vents, camo and binocs, 76% camo. I usually try to do passive scouting, but it really gets me nowhere.
Last game i detected some tanks (an AusfB among them), then sat in th bushes while my team whacked away at them. Before i got killed i circled a KT until my team killed him (he tried to kill me instead of them).
And what do i get? 379 exp and 6266 credits. On a WIN ! Even after 7.2 patch thats just 8700 credits.

It is a trial put there to see if you REALLY want the much better VK-2801.   It plays a lot like the Cougar but it has a woefully under-powered gun that frustrates the hell out of you.

I had a great game yesterday. I had just wiped out a t-34 and we were getting caped. So i went back to our base and reset our cap when there was only 10% left before they won. I hit a fellow lepard and a t 50. Later they got me but our team caped there base. I was called a hero by the lepard on the other team. :)

I sadly gave up on my Leo, bad tiering in battles constantly had me at the bottom against much heavier tanks and the frustration/aggrivation started to take the fun out of WoT...so I moved on...for now.  ;)

My leo... how do I put it... I adore this tank :3 my 680 battles in it should tell you that much. And if i say to myself, I want to get scout this battle, 80% of the time i get scout in it, probably due to how familiar i am with this here speedy little tank of not firing at anything over tier 5 unless it's arty :3

No - get it back and stick it out til you get the VK-2801, you will be glad you did.

I like my leopard.  I'm glad I bought it. I usually creep up slowly and see how the battle turns out and then make my move via the path of least resistance. Then I go on an arty hunt. I nailed 3 arty in a mission just yesterday where I was a bottom feeder.

I actually find it terrible in comparison to T-50. Leopard has terrible acceleration and track traverse. I think my M103 Heavy Tank has similar acceleration and track traverse to the Leopard. This light tank needs a significant buff.

Some will get the Leopard to play the Leopard but the real prize is the VK-2801; you have to play the Leopard to get it.

VK 2801 is the only reason I'm playing the Leopard.

some people just don't use the leopard the right way.
It's great for scouting and counter-scouting.
Usually, when i start a match, i hang around arty and wait for their suiscouts to come and i kill them, fairly quickly. Then, i start to scout.
(to be honest, i like to scout for tier 8-9s more than killing tier 4-5 noobs. more of a challenge).
I tend to stay with the smaller flank and peek around corners for them. I'm constantly looking at my map for paths and escape routes i can take. I'm always telling my team what i see and where people were last spotted. It's rare to find a good scout, even more rare to find a team that listens to a scout. Arty usually apretiates a good scout and tends to keep em well covered. So, instead of me shooting, i get arty to do it for me ;)
When i get about 3/5 up the map, that's when i start to hunt their arty. I never rush their arty from the start. very low chance i'll survive with 10 tanks shooting at me.
I'm a big leopard fan. I've had almost 500 battles in it.
I did get the VK2801, but didn't like it cause it made me bankrupt.
But yea, the leopard is an amazing scout if you use it right. Don't get the leopard if you don't like to scout.

The Leopard was one of the first tanks I really wanted when I got into WOT.  When I played it I really had no idea what I was doing.  I went back to it yesterday once I realized it got a 40% increase in credit generation.

So far so good.  I earned the 'Ace Tanker' badge on my 3rd game back.  In higher tier games I've been passive scouting and in lower tier games I go around and kill.  The gun stinks in higher tier matches but you probably shouldn't be firing in those anyway as it will give away your position.  It is perfectly adequate in lower tier games.  I forgot what a great rammer the tank is - highly recommended.

Using Optics, Spall Liner (for ramming) and Vents as my equipment.

I liked the Leopard... I am not sure why, though. It has armor made of damp pizza boxes and a 17th century musket for a gun... I guess its "cute" for a tank.

I don't get the leopard - why not give it at least one gun that can actually at least dent the opposition. MMing for this tank is just silly... LUCHs can pwn in a lot of games, why then put you in a tank with a top gun that is just plain embarrasing? Yes, I know you are a scout.. but you should at least be able to defend yourself against other scouts. Too bad, since I like the tank itself -- just so darn cute... and fun to drive. Just not fun to shoot.. (and yes, I know you're primarily there to spot)  :Smile-hiding:
