I wrote some thoughts about the role of Tier 3 (and to a lesser extent Tier4) tanks in a guide. Basically you either scout through rush or scout through slowly moving up staying within covering fire of bigger tanks. The last one has the added advantage you can support those biggies by covering their asses when needed.

The past couple of rounds I did decently in the Ausf A in I stayed around spawn.  I zipped from one side to another spotting for the defending TDs and medium tanks a bit and fending off against he occasional light tanks trying to be all lone wolf.  One round I spotted and helped finish off the last P3 and the round after that I 2 shotted a hetzer (apparently one shot damaged the track but didn't do any damage and last shot blew it all to hell) then I ran right infront of a KV1 and died.
Best rounds I ever had in that craptrap, though.

Problem is, that most of people won't help you even if you fight around the corner, because they'd have to stop camping the road where maybe they will soon spot the enemy. And also 3/4 people can't read map and when they are two at one side of base and see other two are having trouble vs 5 enemy, they just sit and keep watching streets/areas of the other side. Don't they realize that they soon gonna face the same outnumbering force themselves? Bah!

To be honest i'm not watching the map much, its far too small to see much on it.

FNG here.  Took some sorting out, but I'm slowly getting the hang of grouping/running/scouting.

Question:  Since I'm still in the t-1 tank (first Russian I think) and running the rookie fights, my best bet is to scout for our SPG's (if we have them) or scout for the mediums?  I find I can't keep up with anyone, even after I've researched the tech tree for the tank completely, and upgraded completely.

Stay in the recruit battles for now. Scout for SPGs, or stay as support defending them from scout/rush attacks.

Your survival in the standard battles would be measured in seconds (unless you find a REALLY good hiding place).

Here's my tuppence worth;

If you are in a light tank, don't hide in the bushes next to the TDs, scout in front of them about 50 to a 100m so they can shoot the stuff you reveal.
For all types, always have an exit route planned.
Don't spam the map marker, and if you do ping it put in chat what's there.
Don't spam "help me" without qualifying what you need help for.
Don't spam "help me" if you are in a light facing down their entire team.
When you die, let your team mates know what killed you if you are not in range of someone else, especially if it's a hidden TD. Saves next guy rolling into that JPanther's sights.
Protect your artillery, I'd quite happily suicide a light if it means taking out their Hummel. If you see lights heading towards your arty, stop them however you can. [Ramming is fun and a perfectly acceptable tactic for a light to take out SPGs, don't listen to the haters. :) ]
Pressing any ammo button twice will reload your gun to that type, stop firing into the ground to reload, it's annoying to people who know what to do.

And finally,

DON'T PLAY A STANDARD GAME IN A TIER 1 TANK!!!! You are hampering your team from the start as you are taking up a space that could be filled by someone else in a useful unit. You will also almost always get TK'ed within 3 nano seconds of the match starting because it really pisses people off. You'll be playing with the big boys soon enough don't worry. Also anyone who spams chat with "HAI we win now wif loltractor!!!11" is a friendless gimp who will never get to even kiss a woman other than their sister.

Have fun!

I have used ramming to stop a leopard in my base, nothing like taking the only advantage he has away. but other times I have run him down in my pZ3 or 3/4 (not as fast) as well. It all depends on the situation. I usually do not ram arty anymore because you get nuked by his help as you sit there trying to kill him.

FME# (Whatever 3) Kills are better than a win!! So, when I'm in the circle and the counter is on and suddenly I see a arty close by that I can go kill I should leave the circle and kill it...regardless if the enemy is in our base and the race is on!!!
Wrong nimrod, whereas the number of kills helps your creds/exp at the end of a battle, the overall victory of taking the flag gives you a BIGGER bonus to BOTH. So stop being selfish when honestly, no one cares what your kill count is because it means exactly "0". However, if you make a habit of leaving the circle and your team losing because of it, that I guaruntee they will remember!! And you can count on "smacktard" being the NICEST thing someone will call you!

once made an error almost likes this
was alone me and an arty... we both started caping and i decided to go get him before he caps and leave a draw cap...

the other was an arty... and i was in a KV-3
we lose because i got killed by it

yeah my mistake and i regret it i could have made more exp and credits (probably the best until now)

but point said, i killed 9 of the enemy teams (all the bigger ones)

If you are scouting for your spg's make sure they are in position to support you. The tier 2-3 spg's can't shoot across the whole map. So make sure they are in position to take advantage of what you uncover.

If you are uncovered by a scout don't stay in that spot move. Even if it is only a little to the right or left moving to a whole new square on the map is best but sometimes that can leave you to exposed. But staying in your position is a sure way to get a piano sized piece of lead dropped in your lap.

When you first start the game up press the F1 key. While your waiting for the battle to start or others to load onto the map press the F1 key.

You can stop reading the information the F1 key gives you when you can recite it all from memory.

There is a map in the lower right corner of your screen make sure you look at it every 5 secs.

If a team mate is circling a target to kill it. Don't rush up to help stay back and time your shots to help him. Running up to help him will just get him killed. And don't shoot unless he is to the right or left of the target. If you miss the target you hit your ally and that is just bad. If you do mistime your shot apologize and take responsibility for it. Don't just keep going letting the guy wonder if your a dingle-berry or just retarded.

If your not sure what your best course of action in a fight might be ask someone. The only stupid question is the unasked one.

some things that i can almost no longer stand :

- if half of your team go west (7), if 5 tanks go middle, if you're alone with 2 arty behind, DON'T FOLLOW THOSE 12 IDIOTS. if there are 3 path on the map, be smart, cover the path that is not covered by anyone, don't let a hole in the defence just because "you don't want to stay alone" ... coward   :o

- if there are arty on the map ... KEEP YOUR FREAKING DISTANCES IDIOTS !!!

- you want success ? guess yes ... TRY TO KEEP A COMBAT FORMATION !!!! some units ahead and 50/100m behind, support units (TD if possible). bigger distances between units, bigger chances of defeat  <_<

- you have the bigger tank of the battle ... yeah stay behind ...   if you have THE tank of the battle, use this advantage for your team, NOT FOR YOU NUMBN*** <_<

- your team is 50% tank and 50% TD, the other team is 70% tank and 30% TD ? it's time to defend

Don't block friendly tanks, espcially when engaging the enemy.

I know sometimes its crowded in an area, especially narrow streets, but don't block friendly tanks from moving forward or back. If it comes down to it go to another area instead of causing traffic congestion.

Do not charge in between your teammate and the tank he's engaging. Greed will not you get you ahead in this game. There's very little value in finishing off a lamed victim if you get blasted by your teammate.

FME#(whatever)
You are in a Tier 3,4 etc (pick your below T6 vehicle of choice) tank/TD and you don't know what your job is in a battle (or you act like it :)), so you try to follow the tanks to the front or run out and try to scout and get insta-killed.
This is WRONG!!! You MAY be able to do this if you've got all the upgrades for this vehicle, but most likely you are going to be nothing but food. So, instead of just feeding someone on the other side a kill, protect your support!! That's right! Stay back and protect your own sides arty, trust me, the enemy WILL GET AROUND TO IT...so suppress your impatience and just wait. You may even get a kill!! You may save yourside from a loss by helping keep your arty alive!
That goes against EVERYTHING everyone else says about T3/T4..everyone says those should scout and do nothing else, lol.
This is funny because the FME is 100% correct.  I had one of my better battles in a Pz3 this way.  It the Prov map and I was one of the smaller sorts on the map.  Mostly T6/7/8 types with 88s and 100s.  All I had was puny 50mm.  Enemy had a bunch of Leos to spot for arty.  We had almost none.  Before match, I stated my intention to find a bush and kill the Leos when they made their inevitable Charge of the Light Brigade across the map.

I was told "NO! PZ3 SHOULD SCOUT!!!11!!!!1"  I simply responded "later".  Match starts.  Leos come flying over the hill and bear down on our SPG.  I kill a couple of them by sitting still, careful aiming, then displacing to avoid enemy arty.  Leo threat eliminated, I began scouting for our heavies and big mediums on the other side of the tracks.  I killed an enemy medium and damaged a few others while spotting for the heavies that finished them off.  I then came over the tracks, dispatched couple of SPGs back at their flag, helped capture the flag and we won.

It was about knowing what a low-level medium is good for, knowing that you're not necessarily cannon fodder and just a fatter scout, and playing conservatively but not timidly.  When you're a T3/4 medium in a room full of higher Tiers and bigger tanks, don't listen when they tell you to rush out and die finding targets the second the map starts.  You should scout, but you're not a Leo so don't act like one.

Cheers,

Logan
