HE vs. AP rounds (M40/43)

Hi all,
I'm running an M40/43 and would like to know when to use HE rounds and when to use the AP rounds. I believe that I rarely miss. Should I use AP rounds as main load? I have only ever used HE so far.
Thankful for some input!

I played the M40/43 a while back (like at least 6 months). I always loaded a few AP rounds just for lulz. Compared to Soviet tanks it is very inaccurate, but still, arty is a lot about luck, why not go all in every once in a while?

I carry 1-2 AP rounds on my 40/43 and 1 on my T92. I use them if I know they are about to infiltrate arty and I have time to switch a round. If ya fire AP into a tank at less than 200 Metres, you really screw his day. I one shot a lot of tanks doing this. I would not try lobbing them out there past say 500 meters because of accuracy issues and if ya miss, there is 0 Splash.

If you have player any other tanks and used Ap you would have known that has bad accuracy >500m, and it has trouble pen tier 7 and above. (I have one hit KO a VK 4502 (P) Ausf. A with AP with my Su14) But Ap is best used when you're on the defense

Thanks for the input!!
I tried the AP the other day and I totally get it now. I was constantly missing or when I hit it mostly bounced. Sometimes when I "critically hit" it did ZERO damage. Huh?? But then I read what you guys wrote about the distance. I now carry 5 rounds of AP for defense and Himmelsdorf matches.

I load 50% AP 50% HE.
My M40/43 specializes in AP rounds and I use them as much as possible.
The trick is to know when to shoot them. The AP round loses penetration value as the range increases -however- even at max range its AP round will easily penetrate the side armor of any tank except Maus and E100. Those last two you need to have inside 600m range to pierce the side armor.
Using AP is very rewarding too. There is nothing like seeing an E75 crap its pants when 80% of its hitpoints vanish in one hit. Or to 1-shot tanks that with an HE round you wouldve barely done 30% HP damage to.
My best so far was a map where I one shotted 6 of their tanks with AP rounds.

Well my APs do zero damage.
That happens when you hit their tracks. Its very annoying but rare. With AP you need to put your cursor just behind the tank so the SPG aims or the ground behind the tank not the raised elevation tank turret. This causes the AP round to come in at a flatter arc and strike the upper parts of the side armor. On the other hand, if you aim for the turret the arty lobs the round at a higher arc which tends to fall short.. and hit the tracks not the hull.
I know it doesn't make much sense but you have to see it happen to believe it.
