A plea to players: there's only so muc...

Please, an SPG can only do so much. Why do people either refuse to scout, or refuse to stay safe? All too often I find myself doing quite well, then realizing the rest of the team all charged east, getting themselves shredded and allowing 3 HTs and an MT to destroy the SPGs and the retreating forces. Other times they sit in one place, allowing themselves to get shot without spotting their enemies. Sometimes, when all seems well (they're holding their own, keeping an enemy still and spotted), they suddenly rush out to a useless death. It's frustrating.
Is it just me? Am I overly critical? Is it wrong of me to criticize those that are on the front lines? I feel as though there's much to be desired in team cohesion. Is there really much more I can do as an SPG than to warn of the dangers of LT swarms, of massing forces along one route, and of charging headlong into certain death? If it's something I can do, then so much the better; it's easier for me to do something than to convince others to do something.
In short, why do teams seem to neglect the support SPGs can provide? How can I, as an SPG, maximize my usefulness to a team that refuses to acknowledge my existence except for the rare occasion where I'm the last one standing?

The daily life of an arty player.
Also, when you get to higher tiers, people tend to drift to the flank and leave the center open. All in all, scouts get in and rape you.

That does not sound promising. I would think that higher-level play would include more intelligent and flexible players.

Don't be TOO disappointed... It can and does include some real top caliber players.
It's just that you get the same kinds of morons at all levels, and it hurts a lot more when they're driving the IS-7 than it does when they're just in a T-34.

ok different ways to look at this, scouts mode, you wait 2 minutes dash in light up arty , get out, arty still living, not a shot at them at all .
this says you paying 0 attention to the mini map.
flank pushed, but the other flanks weak . which do you support? the tanks you have 0 shots at , or tanks lit on weaker flank?
then comes on protect me every one? want that , bring your own, make a platoon , bring your own buddy to do that role.
all comes down to the pub games, we all seen it, all seen 3 arty trying to hit 1 tank that they got to wait 2 minutes for the shot , but the other flanks getting rolled, with tanks in the open.
where is the arty? waiting for some one to bitch them to react to the mini map.
whats a mini map? i can garuntee there are a lot of arty players that dont even pay attention to it ones they sat waiting on the shot.
what makes a good arty player? one who will look at the mini map all the time, take that shot that wont hit , but will splash damage behind that rock, behind that building, enough to make the other side go o shit.
arty who will relocate with out having to be told.
learn to play it, and learn that once you sat down comfy , you dont just rock forwards and back to avoid a counter, you can relocate half the entire map if needed to get a shot in .
arty who takes 4 -6 shots on a good open map, should be shot. open map, campanova , any thing like that el haluf, should be thinking damn i got hardly any ammo left.
good arty should be getting confederate at the end of the match.
but arty who got no idea what just wants to noob tube, and i seen it way to often to care for it, is on there own .
i no , i recognise arty players i no and trust who is worth defending.
but noobs, who just no idea and should stay in a bison, or uninstall and go play tic tac toe on a pen and paper and not be allowed a ip adress, should be left to die as they no idea how to use it.
yes i seen bad arty in a tier 8 too, not just a tier 4-5, makes you wonder, what did you do to get it?
but at the end of the day , please be of use to the team , by watching the mini map like its a 3rd eye, react to it, no where to put a blind shot, not just a spotted shot, take that spam shot, it all helps the team.

SPGs are seriously OP,EZ mode and they need to be taken out of the game or completely nerfed (to french army status)

Arty just saved my arse (and my Tiger) so I have no drama. Faced off against a 3/4 T29 and Derp KV in the streets of Lakeville and as I tried to do a tactical retreat I ended up drawing both tanks out into open next to the church as they were thirsty for some Tiger blood (was not my intent just turned out that way). The arty only did about 300HP damage to the 29 but it was enough to save my bacon and allowed me to take the Derp round and finish the KV.
If your reading. Thanks.

i agree, i was in my Grille and a fellow player was in a STPZ-2 so we figure yea we can rain down some pain..... nope, turns out the entire team parted like the red sea to let a T50 and a PZ3 in so we were dead in less then 1:30 of the game start, thats one major complaint when i drive arty... the other is times when i had my sTPZ2 and i was just bouncing off Lowes and such... said "i cant do crap against that Lowe, sorry" after about 5 failed shots... so i move and start to beat on the derped KV about to blast our heavy, thus resulting in a wall of text "omg arty so stupid, y u no go for lowe" "oh you suck a f**king stupid arty player, you fail" with many other obscenities and insults.

I agree
If players would understand how much of a difference the biggest ( and slowest reloading ) gun on the field can make to a battle.
I have played german and russian arty up to tier 7's at the moment and being able to hit most of the tanks in any battle for 3/4 of their health in one shot would make a huge impact if.......
1. Team members kept the enemy lit so arty isn't shooting blind.
2. Moved far enough away so that they can be eyes for the arty just in case the noobs let a scout through and arty has to go into td mode and destroy the scout themselves
3.Dropkick 'team members' not understanding that even though arty can do a great deal of damage that the reload times are usually 50% longer than any other tank in the battle.
4. Don't harrass arty players for not killing the tank in the spot's that 6 different team members are clicking on in the mini map.
5. Trying to assist a team in a game where my average ping times for all 11.5k battles I have played is 320ms
The idea of nerfing arty is just small minded and shows a jealous and selfish personality trait.
There we go, thats my rant about non-arty playing tankers lol
ps Playing a battle with players who understand arty is the best feeling ever in this game

Oh my. I know I've only been playing for a short while, but now I'm getting apprehensive about continuing down the SPG line. The games where I get a competent team are spectacularly fun for everyone involved (even the enemy, if they have a good team in response), but if I'm not going to see any improvements as I invest more and more time...
I really don't want to give it up, though; that feeling when I take a horribly aimed shot to try and stop an LT early...and it connects...or when I try to hit a KV and it moves, resulting in the MT behind it getting hit and dying...it's great.
I suppose in reality I'd be doomed to foolish teammates no matter what vehicle I'm driving, though.
Also, in response to the poorly written critique of my playing style and abilities, all too often my allies expect me to be able to hit targets that are blocked by a mountain range, even after I told them I can't cover them. Re-positioning to hit them would result in a long travel time during which I'm liable to get sniped by a TD that they've let get close to base. Other times the only thing they've lit up is a tank that's hiding well, so I've little choice but to wait a minute or two for him to pop back in range. I'm not perfect, but I'm certainly not stupid.

Your best bet to learn when and how to reposition safely is to spend some time in the SU-5 with the 152mm mortar. Its limited range and very limited ammo supply forces you to learn how to pick your shots and relocate for maximum effectiveness.
That, or just grind up to a Hummel/GWP. Being as fast and agile as many of the Medium tanks you're facing makes repositioning a breeze!

Why do Arty players always blame the team for their mistakes? You think Arties are the only ones who have their team fail at backing them up? It happens to -us all-, and will continue to happen unless you start relying on you to protect YOU.
I don't know how many times I've seen an AMX 13 90 being spotted for 60 seconds running down some part of the map, with the team blaring warnings at Arty to move. What does Arty do? NOTHING. Absolutely nothing. I don't know if these Arty players are trying to hide - don't care, or have a case of extreme tunnel vision.
Or when a flank completely fails, instead of moving from the onslaught. They sit there, inside base, just firing away.
So yeah, people need to learn some situational awareness, and learn to focus on more things then one. Not all players of course, but a lot.
Things Arty players don't do, and should do.
1) Please look at the minimap and chat windows. It's frustrating trying to warn someone who isn't paying attention.
2) YOU CAN move! No matter how slow you are, move if danger is coming! If you see a flank on your team fail - then move instead of sitting in the same spot! And definitely don't cry because the whole team didn't come back to save you.
3) Don't rely on team for anything. Use team tactics when you can, as much as you can. But assume that, and realize that you can't depend on anyone. Then take steps accordingly.
4) Don't be so predictable. Every body knows which locations Arty is hiding in. Every scout, and fast tanks knows exactly where Arty sets up and hides on every map. 90% of all Arty in the game go to the same spot, every time.
5) Learn to shoot in TD mode. Practice with some of the DERP TDs in the game, and learn to fire without scoping in. Some Arty players are absolutely great at this. I once saw a tier 5 Arty get 6 kills in Hummelsdorf. He destroyed anything that came his way, and flanked when he needed too. Was insane. Also, if I had a peice of gold for every time I've been killed by an Arty in TD mode - I'd be rich. Usually I have to get within 75meters in my Lorraine just to spot a camping Arty in cover. So remember to time the shot carefully.
6) Last but not least... At least TRY to shoot the fast moving scouts that are coming. Don't assume your team will get it. Because I've seen situations where a T-50-2 went right by the whole team, because everyone assumed somebody else would get it, and no one did!
Anyways, problem with a lot of Arty players is that they feel that they are the most valuable tank on the field and some players are their pawns... No don't expect someone to sacrifice their tank, just so your target can be spotted. And rememember - for every team that fails their Arty - there are two matches where Arty fails their team. It's a hard class to play, and sadly most shouldn't be in it.
Defend yourself. Relying on anyone in this game is a road to dissapointment.

The worst part is, Hellseer, that I do everything you say I don't. I'm just an SPG; I don't have front armor for when the team lets an LT by, for when I fail to get an amazing shot on that same LT, and for when he by chance goes the same way I was escaping to. I've gotten some silly shots off on LTs, including a great one that made the one following him bug out, but there's only so much I can do.
