Ha, you wish!
What will happen is that IS-4 will get moved to tier X with the best gun and it will be elite (the gun is the only upgrade available).
You will get the IS-8 with a garage slot and a new 100% crew, it will have everything but the engine researched and the xp that you have currently sitting on the IS-4 will now be sitting on the IS-8.
I'm pretty sure the modules that you have upgraded on the IS-4 will translate to the equivalent modules on the IS-8 being upgraded. i.e. if you have the upgraded suspension on the IS-4 then the IS-8 should have the upgraded suspension on it already.

if you do want to make it anything like the German line you can let the IS-7 grind for the S-70 gun with the IS-8 gun, and let IS-4 have it's tier X gun from the beginning.
Now I do realize the D-25-T was the original gun on the IS-4 on reality, but this game has long ago lost the ability to resemble reality correctly, so at list make it as balanced as possible.
Not that I should care, I already have my IS-4 maxed out in the garage (hell, I got the IS-7 about a week ago) so I'm not gonna have to grind nothing. But fuck me, I hate dumb things.
