I am looking for a low tier sniper.  Probably tier IV or lower.  I have or had some nice ones at tier 5 and up but am looking for something fun at the lower end. The other factor is how the MM treats these lower tier snipers.  When grinding my Pz IV a while ago I got tired of being put in higher tier matches where I was mostly out gunned.  So that is why the MM is a factor in this question.

TDs are fine for consideration as well.  Something that can shoot long, accurate, and can do some damage when it gets there.

Thanks.

SU-76, tier III. You face from tier IV to V tanks, and you can penetrate everyone. Churchills are your worst threat.

Tier 3 tds.
Any of them, depending on your playstyle.  Marder's the best pure sniper, the Su-76 has great camo and a good 57?  gun that can snipe as well, and the T-82 is just AWESOME with either the derp (one-shot M7s anyone?), or the 57.

Also, the 57 on the T-28 makes it a good sniper.  The Hetzer and M8A1 also can fit guns that are pretty good for sniping too.

Marder 2 with camo and sixth sense = invisible sniper

Has excellent gun traverse for a TD, infact the best in the german tree

I got top gun and scout in the same match, snipe snipe snipe until out of ammo

Random gun mechanics mean some shots are dead on the next one misses wildly but every hit does solid damage

Important thing is it kills everything it faces - up to tier 5 heavies and mediums. I never care who is on the other team. Dont worry if you are bottom in this thing - you can take everything out incl KV, Churchill, T1 by yourself by being a... Sniper

The only real threat is some random light scout finding you by accident on his suicide run, or your own team failing

Cos it is such a keeper it also deserves investment in a camo net, optics, and a gun laying drive - pimp your $1 million dollar marder.

Marder is probably the most OP low tier TD, SU-76 has a nice accurate gun in the 57mm. The T-28 has some of the best guns for its tier if you want to lay the hurt on anything it ever sees with a medium tank, some love it and some hate it so your mileage may vary. I am quite fond of my Pz 38t, it's a nice well rounded tank that can hurt most tier 5's if you can hit them in the sides but stay clear of heavies (you will only annoy them at best).

If your intent is to get around the MM through sheer firepower then your best bet is either the T-28 or the Marder. Both have killer guns for their tiers so its all down to if you want a fast and active medium tank or a hide in the bush TD. And both are literal glass cannons, both can be dispatched in just a couple of hits so either way you go playing smart is going to be a must in higher tier games.

The SU-26 is accurate enough to be considered a sniper. Just keep that in mind because whenever someone's in it they tend to be incredibly annoying to fight against.

Its used to be the MS-1 no im not joking due to a typo it had 0.2 accuracy for quite some time right now its probably the 57mm on the SU-76.

Special mention must be given to the trolltastic SU-26.

Notable low tier sniper tanks:

T-26 (tier 2 russian light, great gun high pen for its tier), Marder II, PzIV (the best tier 5 tank!).

Well nuts.  I have had all of the tanks mentioned except the SU-26.  Had the Marder, did well but sold it b/c the gun was too inacurate and I got 2sk all day long.  Su-76 was fun too but bad traveserse and no armor had me get rid of that too.  T-28 was really one of my first elite workhorses.  That sled is a nice ride when fully upgraded and a 100% crew.  Kind of like a scout that is the size of an apartment building.  Got tired of being punked by Shermans.  I was thinking of the T-46 but since it is a Tier III light it will get hosed by MM.  I may revisit SilverForceX's suggestion and look at the T-26.  As a tier II it may not get treated so poorly by the MM.  Depends on the gun and motors.  With clutch braking or maybe off road it might be a good candidate.

So if you see me trolling low tier battles with something and having fun it will be in part b/c of your advice.  Then again I may just get a Hetzer with a 105 and go Hetz.

Many thanks to all the posters.

T-26. Good accuracy, big ammunition count on the top 37mm gun. Turret sit high on the body so can peek slightly over the low walls.

I use it more as a sharpshooter since its a 37mm gun. I tend not to wait for the aiming to dial down completely at targets that are close enough, so that's sharpshooting for me.

Marder II is hands down your best traditional option. American tanks/tds with the 57mm gun aren't bad either as they've got a bit more accuracy then the Marder but don't hit nearly as hard.

Marder 2.

The Stug or panzer are pretty good with the L70 but the Marder 2 can kill just about everything MM throws at it.  The Stug and Panzer4 will occasionally get pulled into matches with tier 6/7 heavies which will give them trouble.

Marder2s top gun isnt the most precise gun in the game but its rof and aim time not to mention gun traverse are all excellent.
