If you can get a KV with the second turret before 7.3 hits, you'll get a free tank and slot, btw.
I hadn't done the medium line, so after I'd gotten the KV-13 (which is amazing) I went back and hit the T-34 and T-34-85. The T-34 is pretty amazing -- its 57mm will pen anything it runs into, and it has reasonably thick, well-sloped armor. I wish I'd had it much, much earlier. Good, solid tank without the terribly unfair matchmaking you'll see in later tiers, great to get a taste of USSR mediums.
In the heavy branch, leading up to the KV, is the T-28. Stock, it's terrible, and its armor is paper-thin (many lights have better armor), and it's a big easily-targeted unsloped box... but once upgraded, its gun selection is amazing (the T-34's 57mm ZiS-4 and the KV-3's stock 85mm F-30) and it's quite fast and nimble. If you enjoy it (many people don't) the KV-1S is basically a heavy version of it -- boxy, thinly-armored, quick, well-gunned.
Also, everything anyone says about the IS is a lie. It's not fast, and it's got pretty bad armor. The IS-3, on the other hand, is pretty quick, has unusual "pike" front armor with excellent angling, and puts big holes in everything.
Really, USSR heavies are all over the charts. I wouldn't say there's any common theme except "accurate guns are for Germans, lulz":
KV-1: tough, so-so speed, so-so guns.
KV-2: as KV-1 but easy target, terrible turret, amazing guns
KV-3: good armor, mediocre sloping, mediocre guns except the very slow-firing D-2-5T
KV-1S: quick, terrible armor, weaker guns than KV-3 with the same top gun
IS: so-so speed, okay front armor with good slope, so-so side armor, decent top gun
IS-3: quick, amazing top gun, good front armor with great slope
IS-4: IS with great front armor and amazing side armor, better guns than IS-3
IS-7: haven't gotten it yet
And branching off from the KV-1S:
KV-13: Faster than a KV-1S, armored like an IS (-5mm on the sides), with excellent 85mm guns but lacking the strong, slow 122mm guns of the KV-1S and IS. If I'd gone KV-13 --> IS I would have been super-pissed at the "upgrade".

And when 7.3 goes live:
T-150: Don't really know about it, but the gun on it, I used it and it's awesome.
KV-4: Very good gun, mean armor, rams pretty well right now although in the first test, it could go at 50 downhill and ram people to Jupiter. Literally.
ST-1: Incredible armor only outmatched by the E-75, penning it is out of the question when hulldown. Great gun too, but watch out for the turret sides and the driver hatch, which are big weakspots.
IS-8: Don't think heavy anymore, think med. :V It's possibly one of the funnest tanks in WoT due to the huge speed. However, the armor is lacking. The gun can be used insanely well too. Don't come out saying that you circled a German heavy, cause that's somehow normal. :3

Thanks guys. I'm thinking that I might go down possibly 2 paths - the Russians and Americans. Sounds like a bit of variety between the two.
Here I am talking about end of game tanks - but really - how long has it taken you guys to get there? I guess even if it takes me ages, I still want to make sure I'm researching on the right path

First off, sup fellow Clan mate.
Second, the T110E5 is rather very fun to use, though the Commander's Hatch on top of the Turret may prove to be a problem at times. Also, the Maus and E-100 are excellent German Tier 10 Heavy Tanks. The Maus is pretty much a "bunker" while the E-100 is a mini-"bunker" with a good Gun/Canon.
Hope you have fun grinding with what you think is best for you!

Cheers guys. I think I'll keep referring back to this thread to ready your info about the tanks. All of these tank names etc are going way over my head lol.

If you have a premium account you can make it through the majority of a tree in a month. Your stats will really suffer during a grind though and it will usually take some time to recover them afterward. Based on my personal experience the US line is a great support vehicle but should never lead a charge anywhere. The T110E5 CAN lead a charge however it really doesn't do well on open maps and you have to mind your surroundings so you don't get hit by arty and you can never advance more than a tank length ahead of your teammates. It is still ultimately a support tank but you don't have to baby it quite as much as the T29 for instance.
I don't think US tanks are very well rounded. You are an excellent support vehicle, have good firepower, and can seriously be an asset to the team so long as you aren't being focus fired. A tier II tank can actually penetrate the rear of the tier IX and X US heavies reliably. That means HE rounds to the back are almost a guaranteed penetration which is brutal.
Soviet tanks are actually very well rounded. They are pretty easy to do well with and can actually fill a few different positions on the field easily. I highly recommend the Soviet line to any friend just starting because they seem more forgiving of mistakes.
To a new player I would have to say Soviet first, German second, and then US or French last once you actually understand the game a little more and improve to the point that you can actually hide the weaknesses of the US and French line because they just aren't very noob friendly and you may get frustrated if you start down the path first.

From what I've read not many people are keen on this tank - but I'm loving my tier 2, T-26! It's really helped me learn that I need to be patient and stay back and play a support role. Starting to have much better results now
Not sure if I want to jump to Tier 3 yet or keep playing the T-26 for bit longer...

You liked the T-26? Wow, it's a tank that I didn't love. D: The T-46 is exactly like it, but use the best 45mm on it. If you get some trouble with the T-28, let me know, cause I loved it. :3

I also <3 the T-28. It tears up anything remotely near its tier with the 57mm ZiS-4. The 85mm F-30 is bigger and scarier, and if you like it is exactly the same playstyle as the KV-1S heavy tank with the 122mm D-2-5T.

Before you go down any tree remember around about T7 you will start to lose money due to damage resupply of rounds and lost games. Try to keep what many here would call a farming tank to keep credits coming in cause T10 tanks just lose money so you need to think about a good farming tank.
Try leveling arty as well to help you understand how and where to hide as a med or heavy tank and how arty plays in this game.

I think you have been getting good advice, but I wanted to give you a little advice from my experience. I took a much different approach to the game when I started. I got a little bit of everything. Now this approach won't get you to end tier tanks as quickly, but it will provide some variety and allow you to find the tanks that you prefer. I did switch to power grind on the american heavy line for 7.2 & the same for the russian line for 7.3 and although it gets a little monotonous playing the same tank over and over you definetly get to know the tanks better. The american line was fine until the T34, but you don't have to worry about that now with the M103. The russian was a fine line of tanks strangely the only one I haven't done well with is the IS-4, but now that I have it fully upgraded my win rate is on the climb. I had a good time in the T1 & M6, but both are typically hated on, so your mileage may vary. The tech tree is splitting on the russian lines, but you should be fine on either route and will find some crossover between gums and engines, which can help you avoid stock tank syndrome from time to time. As it sits for me I only have 2 lines, american TD and SPG that I am presently not grinding and really have to say that each line has its ups and downs. I do my daily doubles on all of my non-elite tanks and slowly progress. The T110E5 is a great tank and very versatile, I find that I pwn with it in clan wars, bit have a hard time winning solo in pubs. I am not quite to the IS-7, but from what I have seen it is like an IS-3 on steroids, so I am sure I will enjoy it. The german heavies seem to be more tempermental than the american and russian as far as play style but I think it changes a lot at tier 9. The french lines are a struggle through the lower tiers, but are a lot of fun in the higher tiers, the 13 90 & lorraine are two of the most fun tanks I have played and I can't wait to get to the AMX 50 100 and up. Habe fun and happy tanking.
