Team Killing Arty

Red_Raven_168's Photo Red_Raven_168 May 01 2012

Been seeing this issue on the forums and experienced it myself -- being charged by a KV --- I shot ---- Team Killed a priest in the line of fire.

but the line of fire was green and all the dots were green.

what happened??!!??

got a friendly Lee to stand still at game start and took some screenies

With my gun sights squarely on his side ----- the sniper view of the same shot (well not exactly the same shot -- line of fire was WAY too long for a screenie showing both of us and the target zone so I lowered my sights . . .

Line of fire is GREEN - dots are also green.

When looking at a building, line of fire becomes red.

Seems that the sniper view for Artillery cannot detect friendly tanks in the line of fire -- but it can detect buildings.

or rephrased --- Sniper view for arty does not see tanks!!! in its line of fire -- and the gunner doesn't yell either.

This is how 99% of arty tks happen. A group of arties are being rushed by a tank and the line stays green when it goes through a friendly. I personally, haven't had it happen to me, but I see it a lot.

SPG's hide in corners of the map for this very reason.

Its because of the angle of your gun vs height of object vs distance from object, and when you factor in arc of the shot arty in sniper mode is hit and miss. When it does hit it makes me grin.

That has been an issue for a while.  I have accidentally shot some teammates because I was in arty view and I didn't see that they were driving right in front of me.

I have had this happen twice in my arty pieces.  First tell anyone that parks in front of you to go away, close to you is not effectively defending you.  I don't believe that in either case my reticle changed due to them being in my LoF, but I would imagine it only accounts for hard cover.  My two times having this happen were totally different.  Once was on cliffs and we had something rushing that one our tanks happened to be in between myself and the rushing tank.  The other was on Prohorvka and I told the tank parked right next to me to move politely, then more forcefully due to him doing no one any good where he was sitting, next thing you know I am drawing a bead on an enemy, zoon in and let loose.  Boom my teammate I warned multiple times to move blows up sitting 20 meters directly in front of me.  I told him I was sorry, but did warn him to move, so what more could I do.  Maybe this can be adjusted maybe it can't but it sure would be nice to know in those rush circumstances if a teammate is in your LoF.

If only there was some kind of radar or mini-map where we could see friendly units...

yes but is it detailed enough to tell you when a friendly is in your line of fire --- 1/2 way across the map

or even right next to you?

I've probably fired over 20000 shells and have accidentally hit a friendly parked in front of me maybe once. It's detailed enough.
