I penetrate that 'mantlet' with 130 pen guns (short 88, M1A2, 7.5cm, ect). It's really not durable, the thing that may have happened is the center part around the gun, that fat part of the barrel... or some other sharp sharp angle at the edges of the turret/mantlet/plate. The flat part could not stand up to it.
