According to WoT no matter how well you're hidden etc. when you fire your position is revealed.
Well I just got plunked to death by 2 "targets" that never revealed themselves..not in my LOS nor on the mini map(believe me I was looking for them).
There seems to be some flaws in advice from WoT...or bugs in the spotting system.

If they have very good camo and are at range they wont light. They also wont light if they are out of your view range.

1. Read the game mechanics section on the wiki.
2. If they're far enough away, you won't see them. Also, if they're 15m behind a bush, they retain camo even if they're firing.

Also each bush between them and you counts towards improved camo. Thats why you fire from behind the bush and not in it. For instance on Murovanka in the woods, if you sit right on the edge and fire you will be spotted faster then if your 3 or 4 bushes back and fire even if your the same distance from the enemy. The players camo value and crew skills come in to the calculation as well as the other poster had said. It stinks getting nailed and not being able to see whats out there but thats when you run and get cover and try to flush them out to you if you can.

It's flaws in the advice. First, you can never see (yourself) any tank that's beyond your spotting range. No matter if they're shooting or not, if you have a spotting range of 402 meters and they're 475 meters away you'll never spot them. For that you need a closer ally.
Second, it usually comes from bushes. Camo in this game works by reducing the effective spotting range. Say a bush drops 33% off spotting distance. If there is one bush between you and the target then your spotting range is reduced by 33%, which might not leave you enough to see them. Multiple bushes stack. If there are four bushes between you each will reduce the spotting range by another 33%, meaning you probably won't see them at all. If they fire their gun, it doesn't automatically reveal them; what it does is cuts the bush camoflage way down and also removes the stacking ability, but both of those only apply to bushes within 15 meters of the tank that fired.
So the crafty player will sit behind 2-3 bushes with most or all of them more than 15 meters away, and rely on teammates to spot the enemy. Then they can fire without being seen.

I have had a French light tank wail on my IS from a very short distance away, no bushes and could not see him until one of my own team drove right up next to him.

OK guess what with WoT advice being wrong and me fully understand cameo mechanics ..txs for straightening it out.

Camo mechanics is one of the more tricky mechanics in the game as it changes every pixel you move so its n ever perfect but what everyone posted above is the bulk of it and should make it easier to figure out in game.

scouts are important for this reason for being able to spot

Closely-related but distinctly separate point. If you're getting smacked by tanks you can't see, it isn't necessarily because they can see you themselves because of a viewrange advantage. Also quite possible that you've been lit up by some other enemy who's NOT firing (i.e., ninja-scout hiding in a bush and maintaining his camo). The tanks actually shooting at you may well be out in the open on some ridgeline or something...just way beyond your viewrange. Happens on open hilly maps like Malinovka, Redshire, and Westfield all the time.
