Could anybody explain scouting to me? I know I'm supposed to reveal enemies for my team without getting spotted myself, but I don't know how to do that without some heavy tank noticing me and killing me. Anybody?

are u doing passive scout?
you should never fire when doing passive scout or everyone will see you.
also, check your vehicle from every angle that your is fully covered
also, dont crush down trees.
scout for your snipers and wait for them to shoot turkies
once again, DO NOT FIRE
when u witness your teammates damage enemies,
they get 2x experience and credits, and you can get x experience and credits

So you just sit in some bushes all game? When do you actually move?

And where do you go at the start of the game? Light Tanks seem pointless when I'm faced with a constant stream of mediums and heavies, and I hardly ever get any exp.

Well the way I scout.I just rush there base and after a 30 seconds or so then I head back to my base.
Also I take out there arty at every chance I get.

If you're scouting actively, pick some route, get to a place where you should meet first tanks and turn around. Repeat in standard clutch places all over map. Don't scout any one place too long, don't rush into enemy tanks. Always treat every tank as if there is half of enemy team behind it. After a while you get sense for where their tanks are and where are some holes in defense, where you can slip through and kill arty or some lone TDs. Don't stop and always assume you are spotted. Drive unpredictably and avoid obvious maneuvers, e.g. driving through narrow corridors. Never suicide, some people expect that, but they are just wrong. During latest stages of tied matches, with 5v5 or so, team with better scouting always wins. If you do things right, you can affect outcome of the match much more than some mid tier heavy.

Is this the same for every light tank? I have a T-46 which I don't really use for scouting, but I have no idea what to use it for either...

Not every light tank is a scout. These low tier lights don't usually get into battles where they can scout effectively. If you want to scout more, get T-50. Otherwise don't bother that much with scouting and play it like a medium tank.

There are two type of scouting.
Passive and Active
For passive, try get bino and camo. Then find a bushes and hide, move from bushes to bushes along with your team when they push and you must ensure that enemy didnt see you when you move.
For active scout, try get coated. Then, simple, keep driving zig zag non stop, dont KEEP try to rush into enemy base, normally you should fall back after you reach half of the map. Then maybe go scout the same lane again or another lane.

Passive scout is quite boring as you just find a bushes then parking for few minutes... Active scout, if your heart arent good enough, might get heart attack when driving zig zag and shell keep flying nearby and BOOM BOOM BOOM!

i use t50 and t50-2 both great scout tanks
i love the suicide on the base and try to get out alive
but have found the method metioned before best
scout half map and retreat dont always go for the scout medal its not worth it sometimes also use the obsticles for protection i love to use buildings rocks for protection
even dead tanks
and if you practice enough you will get the odd kill ,it is easy for a t 50 to take out a kv ,i always use explosive rounds in my scouts
ands remember even when killing dont stay still get in close and circle your victim shootin in rear as much as possible

This guy has a ton of great videos on scouting in WoT.

What I have to say is:
- Only shoot what you can damage; iif you can pen it, shoot!
- Always look forward; use auto aim to shoot behind you.
- DO NOT STOP!; pause = death.
- Go for arty; however, don't go for it if it means stopping or slowing down to shoot.
- Detecting enemies is most important, especially arty; your own arty can shoot the enemies.
EDIT:
I forgot to mention one thing:
-Zig-zag, bob 'n' weave; they'll have a hard time shooting you then, unless if there's an enemy T-50-2 up your rear.

Read this Guide.  The areas on equipment are geared for the VK-2801 but the areas on Scouting apply to all Scouts.

Only problem is that my tank is really slowed down by zig-zaging...

Understand that "scouting" does not mean rushing the enemy camp every time the countdown timer hits :00.  That is only one type of scouting and it is frequently ineffective.
