Are the maps really thrown out at random? Because I don't think they are.

They always seem to get thrown out in cycles, both by time period, tier, and by individual vehicles.

For example, during testing, theres always one map (usually the worse new map) that everyone seems to get for every other battle.

Then theres those times where you never get a specific map, like Sand River, or Arctic Region for like a month, then the MM will just start giving it to you every 10 minutes or so.

Anyone know the answer, because it gets REALLY annoying when I have desert camo on my German tanks (the best looking camo there is right now), and then only get foresty maps. Then as soon as I change camo scheems, I get thrown into the desert every other battle.

well if it makes u feel better cammo is nothing but to make ur tank look better neways as of right now. I feel u sometimes it dont seem so random. At a later point they will be adding cammo that actualy counts but it has yet to be implemented.  I know it is supposed to be random never feels that way

Actually, no. They aren't, to surprise some/most of you guys and gals. They have several maps repeated throughout the day, then it changes. I forget why, though, if I must be honest.

Well then thats just a bunch of crap on both counts. I'm both paying for just asthetics, AND the the matchmaker will actively screw me over at times.

I mean lets face it, some tanks are just not as good on some maps. It should be perfectly random for the map selection.

Pretty much random.  Doesn't seem like it at times, but I've tracked the last months worth of matches (332), pretty much all in one tank, and over time they're relatively well distributed, a few with higher frequency, a few with lower, but that's to be expected in a random distribution.  My results came out like this:

Spoiler
The actual list, from most common to least:
Spoiler

So, over time, yeah, it's fairly well random, but as with any random result, some will come up more often than others.  There are certainly days where some maps hit the rotation heavy; some example I had where one map, like Mountain Pass, came up six times in a 22 game session, while nothing else showed more than twice.  It happens, buut that's the nature of random.  Usuallym that map showed up very little in the days following, and had long spells of not showing up at all.  So, in the short term, it has hiccups, but they balance out over time.

You can always look in the replay folder to check this on your own account.  Every replay file has the name of the map as art of the file name.

EDIT:  If you expect it to be perfectly even, then you don't understand "random".  Perfectly even would only happen if they played in a predetermined sequence without fail.  With random you will always have a section the appears more often, a section that appears less often, and the majority on the expected average, or therabouts.  Ask any old-school D&D players who's ever set up random events charts.

the maps that are chosen at whatever time are not based on the tanks that you pick. It's still random in that sense.

And lots of games make you pay for purely aesthetic stuff. That's why it's aesthetic. It's for looks. If you don't want it, then don't get it. If you want a camo bonus, then train your crew with the camo skill and get the camo net equipment.

Yeah, Wargaming has said that maps are given a "weight" for their chance of being selected for staging a battle, so that some maps have better odds of being selected at a given time than others.

It's not based on a player's tank choice, it's just the odds across the server of that individual map being selected for a random battle.

I'm starting to think it's not random. The first battle for my doubles has been Himmlesdorf for 12 days in a row on my M40/43. Talk about a swift kick to the balls, that's enough to make me cry, but then my Hummel got Ensk for it's double battle 8 out of 12 days. Not so random or does Wargaming just hate me?

it's based on the server load the map requires

Random does not mean equal distribution. There WILL be crazy streaks with random, because every time you click battle, the map you were just on has an equal shot of being the map you get.

It is a semi random setup from what I recall reading in an update a while back.

What they do is have maps loaded into a "group" of sorts, and the server will cycle through them before loading a new group. That way, its not purely leniar, yet at the same time reduces strain on the server by giving it a smaller number of maps to keep in memory.

It's random, but weighted.

If I remember correctly from beta each map is different in terms of how much resources it uses on the server.    Some maps get optimized, but before they were optimized in during beta, they were extremely rare.   Some maps that were more optimized and use less server resources appear more often.

Don't know exactly how it works, but I just remember people wondering why newer maps weren't showing up as often and this was the explanation.

It's clearly not equal distribution, add up the results from the two people above and you have 1350 games.  Some maps occur nearly twice as much.  I'm not going to pull out my statistical randomness tests, but it seems like a strong tendency.  Especially since we know that it is a controlled process.
