AMX 12t advice?

BattleFerret's Photo BattleFerret May 10 2012

I just upgraded from my AMX 40 to a brand new AMX 12t... and I find that my performance in this tank is utterly atrocious.

At first I got frustrated and was willing to write the tank off as another terrible grind but then thought better of it. I'm certain there's something I'm missing, maybe I'm just playing the tank wrong.

Is there any advice for making this tank fun or is it just going to be another bout of suffering to the next tier?

the next two tanks are similar to the AMX 12t, so it will be more of the same

also check this out:

I know it's a 13 90, but the advice should be mostly workable for the 12t

I found you just have to pick your attack areas carefully as the gun elevation/depression is what really annoyed me about that tank.

Stay behind the main attack thrust and support, flank opponents when given the chance.

It gets quite fun once you get the hang of it and the 13/XX tanks have better elevation/depression, so if you can play this tank well it really sents up your skills for future tanks on this line.

My advice? Get the gun, tracks, engine, better gun, and then radio. Fit it out with GLD, vents (every second counts during interdrum reloads), and a third piece of equipement (i go coated optics or binocs, makes it easier to get scouting xp). But that's just me. And like you said yourself, flank and spank

I found the 12t a real struggle as it gets pretty much the same matches as the 13 75/90 yet is slower, has less gun depression and has a popgun.

You may feel yourself wanting to pull your hair out by the end, but the 13 75 makes it worth it. Essentially, the tanks get better and better with the same matchmaking.

Take some time to learn the 12t since the next two tanks are very very similar and their gameplay is a bit unique. I'd recommend getting new guns, first then tracks and engine. Tier 5 is about the point where stock tanks start to be really inadequate and tanks improve a lot with upgrades.

Try to sneak, using bushes and buildings and whatnot to get around to the sides of your targets. Always know where you can withdraw to reload; the drum reload times only get longer from here. Shooting on the move is a really bad idea, so you need to get into cover and give yourself time to line up your shots.

another thing: never get shot. do not go into a fight knowing you will be shot at, only EVER attack distracted enemies. most T6 tanks can 2-shot you and E8's will rip you to shreds. also, never ever be the first out or on the front line. be behind your frontline (or the enemy front line as you flank) but always have an escape route. one more thing: since your drum reload is under 20 seconds, never enter a fight with less than 4 shells if you can help it.

I don't know about that. Getting the 13 90 is a HUGE upgrade from the 12t and 13 75. On the 12t and 13 75 you really lack in the areas of damage and penetration.   When you move up to the 13 90 you get a gun that rocks the house. Same gun that is on the ARL44 and and the AMX m4.  You also get a much longer reload period in the 13 90, while the 12t and 13 75 have only a moderate reload time.

So on the 13 90 when you go to flank that tank etc, you can really put a hurt on them with the autoloaded rounds, the you have so much time before reload that you can completely relocate to another area without losing any engagment time. You try that on the Amx 12t or evn the 13 75 and it's not going to have a very good outcome. You have a horrible gun.

IMO, and I wish I had learned this sooner, is that the 12t and the 13 75 are good scout killers, and good for later game arty runs.   Hang back at the start, and look for incoming scout tanks and chase them down and kill them.   Once they are all done, study the map for a moment and see if you can find a hole to the back lines and wreck havoc.  Play them like a PZIII.

The 12t and 13 75 are also good against 13 90's.  Don't be afraid to take on a 13 90 with either of these tanks.   You will be able to hurt the 13 90, you can keep up with them, and there is a decent chance they will be out of ammo, and if thye aren't, they will be forced to use their ammo load almost exclusively on you, making them easy prey for your team. Seems the biggest threat to french tanks are other french tanks, even if a tier or 2 below. I do the same thing in my 13 90 against Batchats and Lorraines. They will often beat me overall, but I can basically cripple and knock them out even when I don't kill them. And when I catch them reloading, I usually win of course unless I miss/bounce too much.
