Help in understanding research unlock numb...

I have two particular tanks fully researched and want to open up the research on a higher tier tank, but don't seem to be getting anywhere.
For instance, on the PzKpfw 38 nA research tree, the next tank is the PzKpfw IV, where it says "15,000* (not enough 8,311*" The * being a gold star. Now those numbers don't seem to have any bearing on my experience points or the free experience I have converted from my elite tanks.
Also, sometimes the lower number gets frustratingly close to what I need and then just gets lower again, despite getting some kills in and being part of a winning team. I just can't make any sense of it.
Can anyone please expalin how those numbers work?

The 8,000 is how much MORE exp you need to get that particular thing researched. It would be decreasing as you got more and more exp (less needed) and then would increase if you research something on the pz38na (need more now).

In your example, the 15,000 is the amount of experience to unlock the PzIV. The "not enough: 8,311" is the amount of exp you are short, both specific exp and free exp. I.E you have 10,000 exp on your 38nA and 3,000 free exp, it will look like "15,000* (not enough: 2,000)". Hope that clears it up a bit.
Say you have 2,000 exp left to go. After a game where you earn 100 exp total, it will read "not enough: 1,900."
The more damage you do in a game, the more exp and credits you will earn. So don't make it your goal to go for an easy kill, say taking an enemy down from 5%, but to inflict lots of damage, such as taking an enemy down 50% even if you don't wind up with the kill. Kills are for show, damage is for dough.
