Melbourne Community Gathering Thread - Act...
The_Chieftain
May 31 2012
*Update to note below* We are on for Sat 16th *End update to note*
*NOTE* I ballsed this one up. May well be Thu June 14th or Friday June 15th. If so, watch for another gathering in Melbourne itself* END NOTE*
There is no better place to hold an Australian community gathering for World of Tanks than at the Royal Australian Armoured Corps Museumat Puckapunyal.
10am on Saturday, 16th June is as good a time to meet at the front door as any. After touring the museum, we shall adjourn to a local purveyor of fine foods and drink for a meal and a chat, presumably in Seymour, but we'll take suggestions below.
Given that it's a bit of a walk from Melbourne, you may consider carpooling. Feel free to use this thread for three things.
1) Letting us know you're coming, so we can estimate a headcount.
2) Give suggestions on where to have lunch.
3) Arrange carpools.
See you there!

This sounds like agreat idea. The Pucka Tank Museum is always a great place to visit.
You are aware that is generally only open on the last weekend of each month, so I assuming you have made special arrangements?
http://www.armytankm....au/i-about.htm
ANZAC Armoured Division have posted this link on our forums and we will hopefully be sending a small contigent on Saturday for a get together. We also have a member on the inside (current M1A1 Tank Commander) base at Pucka, as do some other Aussie Clans I assume?
Hopefully this event can be a success and we can put some faces to names/voices!
Regards,
Dawbs.

Oh, son of a....
I totally misread that. Be prepared to reschedule to Friday or even Thursday. We'll have to have another one in the evening in town for those who can't get off work. Stand by, I'm talking with the guy on the 'phone!

Just a heads up - you will NEED to have valid photographic Identification to get into Pukka. (the museum is on the grounds).
It is an active military base and this is not negotiable.
Public transport via V/Line train - http://www.vline.com.au/home/to Seymour then bus to Puckapunyal.

this sounds like a great idea, hope you can make the arrangements......what a bummer that the melbourne tank museum closed a few years back.

I'll drive up. Saturday is preferable although my schedule is flexible. Since I'm in St Kilda my route would be to get onto CityLink and thence the Hume. If there is anyone on that route who needs a lift I can take 3 passengers comfortably, 4 at a pinch.
Chieftan, do remember you'll be here in early winter so you'll need to bring something a little warmer than a Hawaiian T-shirt and sunglasses. The mean 9am temperature last June in the Puckapunyal/Seymour region was 7.1C (the 3pm mean was a sweltering 13.8!).

Been so looking forward to this, but alas its too far for me, hopefully next time.
A 'bit of a walk' is tiny understatement since its over an hour drive north from melbourne city and the average person wont be able to make it because theres no public transport.
On the bright side, there wont be many kids

There is public transport all the way into the base, however, no bus stop near the museum.
Oh, and count me in.

Hmmm, there's 3 pubs in town that have very good meals, a Chinese restaurant (will need to book depending on numbers), Rachel's (another restaurant, but again will need to book) a few wineries nearby (15-20 min drive but not cheap!) and the obligatory Macca's..... lol
Cheers

Ahhhhhhhhhh Pucka ( I cant, she's my Sister) an old Joke!
Chewed a lot of dirt there & hit a lot of Golf Balls into the 2mtr deep storm-water drain, saw the Eagle has landed at the Cinema in 79.
Its a bit soon for me, never be able to organise the time off work in such notice & fly down from the Gold Coast.
I am sure if you ask prior, they would let you have a BBQ at the Pucka Museum, dont forget to support them with a donation at the door & they have a great gift shop on the way out.
Remember they guys who work there are in the Army & staff the Museum on their days off.
As mentioned, since 9/11a private Security contractor mans the gate, take valid id, You have a valid excuse for visiting so all will be good, adhere to the speed limits & give way to Troops & of course Armour, these have right of way, MP's are everywhere & don't take Prisoners, The Museum is right behind the 9mm Range & theres lots of Centurions lining the roads to climb on & have your pics taken with.
Dont forget, lots of Pics.

I'll be driving up. I live in Wantirna South and depending on whether people want a lift or not (and where they live) I can go via Citylink or Eastlink and up through Greensborough. I don't mind travelling a few suburbs out of the way either to pick anyone up. I drive a Grange so it'll be a comfy ride too. If anyone has any interest in a lift, PM me (at work so no phone reception).

Plan B will be Friday afternoon at the museum, say 14:00, but no confirmation on if we're going to do that yet.
Should we do a plan B, we'll hit up some place 1930 for the evening on Friday, looking for suggestions.

Would you want it at Pucka/Seymour or back in Melbourne? Do you have an idea yet where you'll be staying?

We could do the Beach Hotel in Albert Park (decent view of the bay during Melbourne's cold winter). I have my "book club" aka car forum catch up there:
http://thebeachalber...contact-us.aspx
Could go for the Espy? Pretty famous Melbourne pub:
http://www.espy.com.au/
In Fitzroy there's a bunch of places like:
http://www.bimbodeluxe.com.au/
or a shiteload of others that exist around that area...
Could go for the Belgian Beer Cafe which has great food and even better drinks!
http://www.belgianbe...e.com/index.php
A more CBD-orientated pub which also serves damn good beer:
http://www.europeanbiercafe.com.au/
Or, if you're keen to do laps around Chapel St, Bridie O'Riley's is a fantastic Irish pub:
http://chapelst.bridieoreillys.com.au/
And finally, if it's after coffees and food, anywhere along Lygon St would work.
Personally, I don't mind where we go but trying to think of somewhere fairly central to Melbourne. If we had an idea of where Chieftain were staying or where the majority of the people going come from, we might be able to decide on a more central location? Just happy to throw ideas out.
Again, if anyone needs a lift and they're from the east, south-east, north-east or fairly central Melbourne, happy to give them a lift.

Friday would be best, has someone contacted the museum about opening times as the web site is not uptodate. To get into the base everyone in the car over 16 will require photo ID. I live very close and volunteer at the museum so please PM me with any questions. They have a BBQ area, group prices can be arranged for groups over 20 people. The car park is small so avoid campers or trailers. Remember it's a functioning base so stick with going to and from the museum or the angry man (RSM) will come running with his pace stick.
