LowResAllInOne

by Treadalus

ON HIATUS since 0.9.0

PURPOSE:

The purpose of the LowResAllInOne mod pack collection is not to change the game experience but rather to make the game experiencable on older computers and laptops. The best way to increase FPS is to battle at the lowest resolution supported by your hardware. However, the default HUD is far too cluttered to be useful at low resolution. These modifications provide a clean interface for better FPS on older computers (like mine).

DESCRIPTION:

LowResDDS -- a (more or less) complete set of textures compressed 8x (speedtree 64x)

LowResEffEx -- zeros out almost all of the particle effects

LowResHUD -- overhaul of the battle HUD for 720x480 resolution (or higher)

LowResScripts -- all the script mods (zoom/crosshair/control) in one package ON HIATUS

TopoMapMod -- replaces Minimap terrain with topographic outlines (optional)

FEATURES:

No post-mortem tips

Scalable Minimap with direction indicator

Panels resized for less screen coverage

Crosshair panels with reload timer

Old style server side crosshair mod

Zoom mods (arcade and strategic)

High visibility ammo count

High visibility fire indicator

Less obtrusive drowning indicator

Tank and TD turret angle indicator

SPG gun traverse indicator

High visibility map borders

High visibility damage stickers

Extended sniper zoom modes

Customize or remove scope shadow

Target locking in strategic mode

Strategic and sniper modes unlocked

Fast startup skips intro videos

High visibility aiming circle

Enable autorotation in sniper mode (NEW!)

INSTALLATION NOTES:

A happy tanker forwarded this link to an instructional video for the 0.8.5 version:

and I'm laughing my turret off!  I'll bet there's more out there... Anyways, what I do is put the *.zip files in the folder res_mods and then "Extract here" or the equivalent. Be sure to read the accompanying description *.txt files with each update, because sometimes the configuration changes. Also read any further notes in the update discussion. To really get the most out of these mods, you need to set your fullscreen resolution to the lowest supported by your hardware. Mine is set at 720x480 in the preferences.xml file, which is usually somewhere under the hidden ApplicationData folder. Your lowest resolution should be reported by your video driver; use that for fullscreen and the default 1024x768 (or whatever) for windowed mode.

0.9.0 PATCH NOTES:

To restore the tracers (Thanks Nuthriz!) delete the following files under res_mods\0.7.3 directory:
particles\maps\flash.dds
particles\Tank\shot_MTLS.xml
particles\Tank\shot_TNSH.xml
particles\Shells_Eff\trace_*.xml

Just managed to boot WoT on another pc - a rather old pentium4+ class thingy. Found the preferences.xml, changed to 800x600.... and I must say that the game is pretty much playable, with very decent fps (around 20 most of the time, usually above). I can't see shells or tracers, but on that gear I wouldn't even want to turn them on that much, just to be on the safe side and not hinder the fps any little bit more than necessary.

...and yup, the hud makes it totally playable with 800x600 resolution.
So.... thanks again for doing a lot of good work here, and.... I hope to have my laptop back and functional finally at some point, heh :p (as that computer station is usually crowded and there are just afew opportunities a day when I can use it undisturbed :/)

Further suggestions (not sure if they really help):

In preferences.xml change to
<entry>
<label> MORPH_VERTICES </label>
<activeOption> 1 </activeOption>
</entry>

In shaders.pkg rename (e.g. to bu_*) the folders pixelshaders, shimmer, and xzy*
edit -- don't mess with the shaders.pkg

Are we going to see an update for this or is this discontinued with the new british tree?

By the way have you thought of adding it to WoT Nexus as that would seem to be a good place to host it on?

7-zip work quite well, and it's free, and it's open source, so you can see yourself if it's a virus or not.

btw, pkg are just regular zip, just saying.

This mod collection is still going strong--I've just updated it for 0.8.1.  The TopoMapMod now uses all the updated maps, and LowResDDS includes the British tanks.  The LowResHUD is the same as the previous version--that drowning timer doesn't want to relocate, and at 720x480 it shows up right in the center of the screen which makes aiming difficult.  I've been wanting to redo the crosshair panels, but time constraints have kept me from that.  Most of the LowResHUD files are interchangeable with other mods--only the battle.swf file is specific to 720x480 resolution.

Playing with the folders in shaders.pkg doesn't really help much, but turning off MorphVertices does seem to make a difference.  From what I can tell, the bottleneck on my machine is the use of shader version 3.0, which apparently my card doesn't do very well.  There's a ShaderVersionCap option in the preferences.xml, but setting it > 1 causes the ground and other textures not to appear.  The maps with the most buildings (I think they're called "assets" by the devs) cause the most fps drop--I can get 40+ looking straight down at my tank, which drops to 10+ as soon as I look towards a town.  And peering through foliage I'm lucky to get 5+ fps and 200 ms ping!  That's why the speedtree textures are compressed 32x, giving that extra blocky, Atari effect.

The reason there is no direct link is because my original thread for these mods got trashed for providing one, which earned me 1 warning point--see it there to the left? :)  I'm hosting the files on one of my own sites for quality control primarily, but the increased traffic since I started this project is certainly appreciated.  For the record, I am not the original author of every file (in particular, the crosshair panels started life in the J1mB0 mod, and the zoom scripts are widely available), but I've contributed enough of my own edits and original mods to justify the shameless plug for my music that one has to scroll past to reach the download links.  (My first thread had a bibliography of sources, but now I think only those files just mentioned are not entirely original.)  My friends say that my music sounds like it belongs in a video game--I've been wanting to figure out how to make an audio mod with track previews for just that purpose, so watch out for that in the near future.

this mod works perfectly for me, except that the sky is pitchblack, Can you help me fix it ?
I'm using the LowDD and LowEffect packages.

Edit: I was able to fix it myself... just delete all the skybox thing in the mod...

Different cards seem to repond in different ways to the textures--every once in awhile, very rarely, my ground disappears, but next game even on the same map it's all good.  Go figure...  I've updated the LowResDDS to contain a choice between 16x skyboxes and minimal (1 pixel) skyboxes--just remove the extension to the folder name to make it active.

Thanks for the support!  And praise to the devs for fixing the foliage issues!  Now I can snipe again without my fps crashing down to 3 or less.  Views with too many "assets" still drag my performance down, but when looking over a dessert on the edge of a map I've seen my fps hit 50+ on occasion, and I think I even hit over 60 once.  Most of the time I'm between 10 and 30 which is good enough to enjoy playing the game again.

8.4 should be out in... well, I actually wouldn't know how long that takes. In my experience, it takes Treadalus about 3 days to a week to update the patch. Hopefully it doesn't take that much time but you never know.
