This is probably a dumb question, but how are maps oriented, compass wise?
Which way is up?

u can see from the minimap, a V extended from ur white dot indicating which direction ur looking at

The problem is, most people say "right" or "left". If you start at the North end, these will mean exactly opposite things if you mean the right side of the map, and the guy beside thinks it's "right" relative to him, or the map's left side.
This is why i always say East or West, assuming people know where those are

On patch 7.4, your mini map marker will be an directional arrow that points the direction your hull is facing. But yeah, players need to learn how to use a compass.

Unless otherwise stated, maps are "up is north" - in this case, the minimap.

Two words ( South + North ) South means bottom North means top of the map

It would be nice if they put a little directional marker pointing North in the minimap. I'm sure a lot of new players don't know this.

...and its not like we're asking anyone to be complicated about it "Uh, Kilo Victor 2, come about bearing zero one four, make your speed two zero." "Speed two zero? Flank speed, aye."
Left and right fail when you start asking people do do things like "Uh, hey, we need more people north". If I say "we need to push north hard" and we're on Arctic, you know what I mean. If I say "We need more people up here" or "left is falling! HELP!" thats vague, and vague is bad when "up here" is where the enemy main body is.

I've used north/south and east/west for a time until I ran into people dumb enough to ask me "what's north?"
I just say "go 1 line" or "defend (insert coordinates here)." Very specific and cannot be misinterpreted (unless they can't read).

I find it easier in public matches to go by coordinates(example: A1 or D5) since everyone is on the same page there.

I find using left/right far easier to follow than east/west. Left is always left regardless of your orientation towards the enemy. On the other hand, if I’m told the enemy is to the west, then I need to check the minimap to get my bearings cause moving north to south, ‘west’ is on my right while moving south to north, ‘west’ is on my left.
And reading books on battles how many times do you read the enemy is attacking our east flank or our west flank. Never. The flanks are always described as left or right. For instance, ‘the Yankees have turned our left flank’.
And there you have it.

I just ping the map.
^^This.
I find that some maps ex. Lakeville are better for using "left" or "right" to indicate direction. The lines of attack are generally vertical so you can talk about the valley the middle or the city. Artic Region and other maps where the battles usually take place at odd angles across the map are better for using cardinal directions. It elimintaes some of the confusion about POV and such. The update to the minimap in 7.4, that will add a little inidcator of your tanks true orientation will help a lot, I think.

Left/right can be confusing too though. If you are in the north heading south and you say right, do you mean your right (west) or the right on the map (east)? I see people use it both ways.

I prefer minimap-based compass direction.
It seems to be not very effective though - not many know that the little thing called minimap exists, or simply ignorant.
