I switched to APCR, it's more expensive but worth the extra cost if you have a lot of credits. Since you need to get direct hits with HE anyway it doesn't have any real draw backs besides the cost and sometimes I hit tracks and do 0 damage. I think I've bounced one shot.
I was just in a match on El Halluf, I got 7 kills but we still lost. :( Came down to me vs three artillery on the encounter map, I got tracked and knew it wasn't worth it to use a kit and fix it. But it was still a fun match.

How have I not posted my lulzy 7 kill replay here where I pretty much hard carry the team on a scale rarely witnessed, even by good players?
The title of this replay is "7 Kill AMX 105 Whack-a-mole Champion". At the end of the battle, I had one shell left. Arty isn't OP guys, it just let me kill the half the enemy team from across the map at no risk to myself!

lols i came across this topic while looking for tips on playing the 105 AM but it seems i have been very lucky with this arty
while i did note the pathetic damage , its accuracy *imo is dead accurate , i used it like a td once and killed a churchill 7 from across el haluf encounter and he was moving
and while i never played the grille (got my hummel from pz4) i found it to be a fun arty , the 105 am and the reload time is decent
i started out with a 90% crew from the previous arty
though reading the stats on the next t5 tank i was wondering how am i going to readjust to the insane 5.something aim time :/

Compare to Soviet Arty and the Lorraine39 L AM, the AMX 105 AM seems to be very inaccurate for some reason.

I have the thing... if you play German or american artys its one hell of change. It has a completely different firing arc. In fact it doesnt do nearly as much damage as a grille. I have soloed huge tanks 5x my size such as IS and a ACmile. Only becasue it does have a slow reload is what makes it so effective.

i love this Arty ,my best T4 i have used, 400battles and nearly 700 kills so it not to shabby , just have to aim and weak spots in alot of tanks you you will get the kills

In the 8.3 beta test right now the Batchat 155 and the AMX 105AM have lost their ability to mount ventilation equipment.
