Okay, so I'm seeing option 2 with more 2 than 1? Gotcha.

Quietly powering up your deflection aura (you don't want to get any closer to those lightning bolts than you have to), you slowly move closer to Bergonzoli. She seems to be attempting to take stock of her surroundings, half-blinded by her own power. The flickering light of the electrical discharge is giving you a headache, and she doesn't seem to be doing much better. She's vulnerable and unsteady, and though it feels callous and a bit harsh, you have to take this opening.

"Annabelle! What the hell are you doing? Stand down, now."

She turns to face you, her face barely visible.

"C-colonel?", she half-shouts. Her tone is full of rage and confusion.

"Annabelle, stop this!"

That gets a reaction. You jump to one side as a bolt of electricity zaps past you, impacting the wall behind you with an ear-splitting whump.

"No!", she shouts. "I won't stand idly by! I did nothing when that thing killed Suzette! I did nothing! Action! That's what I need! You can't stop me! N-no one can!"

She continues on in that vein, babbling incoherently in a mix of Oenotrian and Gaullian that's too fast to understand. You creep closer. Right. Time to end this.

"Annabelle, Suzette wouldn't have wanted you to tear yourself apart about this. It was a heat-ray. There was nothing you could have done. You knew her better than any of us. You know that she would have wanted you to get angry."

The lightning weakens slightly, and you know you've won.

"I- but-", she mumbles, tearing up.

"D'you know where we are? We're on a ship. A ship full of Witches, on the way to a major Martian stronghold. And d'you know what we're going to do there?"

The lightning withdraws back into the palms of Bergonzoli's hands. She clenches her fists, tears streaming down her face, and lets out a deep, shuddering sigh. When she opens her eyes again, they're full of steely cold.

"You're going to blow it the hell up."

You can't help but smile.

"Good to have you back with us, Annabelle. C'mon, let's get you something to eat."

You turn towards the door, only to be met by a a remarkably furious-looking man in an Albionnese naval captain's uniform, his rather protruberant brow flushed an alarming shade of red-purple.

"Heavens," he says, in a way that makes it sound like a four letter word, "what have you done to my sickbay?"
  • Bravado your way through it; "Captain Boyd, I presume?"
  • Apologize like you've never apologized before.

Sorry for the long delay! There will be more delays, however. See below.

You give the man your best suave smile.

"Captain Boyd, I presume?"

Fifteen minutes later...

"-FOR GOD'S SAKES, WOMAN, YOU'RE AN OFFICER. I WOULD EXPECT THIS SORT OF THING FROM THE DAMNED VESPUCCIANS, BUT FROM A GAULLIAN? I WILL BE REGISTERING A COMPLAINT AGAINST YOUR ENTIRE UNIT. YOUR RUDENESS TO YOUR HOSTS AND YOUR GENERAL DISREGARD FOR ANYTHING RESEMBLING MILITARY PROTOCOL- LOOK, I DON'T PARTICULARLY MIND THAT THAT OENOTRIAN OF YOURS DESTROYED MY SICKBAY. I WORK WITH WITCHES. I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE LIKE. BUT TRASHING MY WARDROOM, DISRESPECTING MY FIRST OFFICER, OUTRIGHT IGNORING ONE OF MY WITCHES WHO I AGREED TO SEND SPECIFICALLY TO HELP THIS MISSION GO MORE SMOOTHLY- NOT TO MENTION THAT APPARENTLY ONE OF YOUR GIRLS HAS SEALED HERSELF IN A FORCEFIELD ON THE REAR DECK AND IS REFUSING TO LEAVE- GOOD GOD, DE GAULLE, YOUR COUSIN WOULDN'T ALLOW ANY OF THIS, NOW WOULD HE?!"

You sit up in your seat as Boyd takes a few deep breaths, his furious tirade running out of steam. The mention of your cousin has piqued your interest.

"Oh, you know Charles, Captain? How is he? Still head of the Free Gaullian Forces or something like that?"

Boyd does a double-take. You can almost see his mind shifting gears. He sits down, sighing.

"Dammit all, De Gaulle. You're exactly as difficult as he is. He's- he's well. I haven't spoken to him much, but he's still doing his best to get Churchill to bend over backwards for him. He's insisting he be allowed to lead an attack to recapture Malagasiland."

You nod, pleased that you've managed to change the subject.

"Oh good. Will that be all, or-?"

He gives you a wicked grin.

"Oh no, De Gaulle. You are going to sit down and we are going to go over this plan of attack or I will have you detained and taken to the brig. Is that clear."

"Well then. I guess that's that."

About an hour later, you leave Boyd's office, feeling somewhat put-down. You've gone over the plan, which is fairly simple with the exception of a somewhat exotic teleportation deployment straight onto the Martian base, but you can't help but feel that getting off on the wrong foot with Boyd was probably a bad idea. Ah well. At least you've still got about 12 hours before go time. You are currently outside the Captain's office, accompanied by a stolid, burly-looking sergeant who's been assigned as your "aide", which really means "chaperone". Apparently the Captain's decided to keep a closer eye on your Witches, a notion you're not entirely comfortable with. Yeah, you screwed up, but you don't like having people peer over your shoulder all the time.

What now?
  • Find Leigh, who was out on the bow deck.
  • Find Latapie, who is in some distress on the aft deck.
  • Find Duke, who is probably somewhere in the Witch area of the hangar deck. You didn't realize she was feeling left out.
  • Find Piron, who might still be in the engine room.
  • Return to Sydney and Bergonzoli.
  • Attempt to reconcile with the Captain.
Somewhat bad news, everyone. As is usually the case, I'm gonna be away starting the week of July 12th. I'll be back for occasional thread-bumps for the rest of July and August, but there's a fairly good chance I will not be able to write new TWQ content. It's a minimal-internet-access kind of thing. So yeah. Stay tuned, I guess?

Find Latapie, and try to reconcile with the captain (if you can't fulfill both of these, then just find Latapie).

So, that's one vote for Albionnese Top Gun Fighter Jockey, and one vote for apologizing and going to the aid of Distressed Gaullian Chick. Tiebreaker, please?

B-b-bumping to avoid eventual thread locking! Don't have time for an update, alas.
