Jumpy aiming

I noticed that although the aiming is sometimes smooth, at other times it becomes "jumpy" where you can't point at places in between for example a high and low point... which of course gets you hammered.
What causes it?

Need to be more specific. But I'll say it's probably a drop in frame rate when ever you zoom into sniper mode and look through bushes yes? Possibly resulting from a low-end or out of date graphics card.

You may have enabled server crosshair, if you're experiencing frequent packet loss you'll get a very jittery reticle.

You might want to see if there are any updates to you vid card and you can try lowering some of the settings.

Elevation of terrain and also your tank gun depression. But I say, lower your graphic setting.

Often enough its server crosshair enabled and lag spikes.
Other thing is the tank and crew skill / vision mecanic.
Tanks with limited elevation and depression mostly suffer from this.
If you notice your gunner will " aim " for you as you are moving your gun and targets pop up.
In sniper mode it often gets jumpy around buildings or cover if you gun tube is on the longish side.
I have trouble with the Ferdi and sometime think my gun fell off the tank.
Its mostly just this version is really bad with FPS and Lag.
having one of those be an issue is bad ..both?
Games not really playable without a morphine drip.

I'm fairly certain what you are describing is the tendency of the game to automatically compensate for shell drop. This is what several of the earlier posters mean by "terrain formations." Aiming at a surface (a wall, a hill, an enemy tank) will cause the reticle to adjust itself, automatically centering the dot on the location you intend to hit with regards to shell drop over distance; aiming out into the open air has no such adjustment, and as such, your two crosshairs will not correlate to one another.
Stole this image from some other random thread, but it illustrates what happens when the "auto-correct" isn't applying because the crosshair is not on a surface (it is centered on the sky on the horizon).
The black arrow represents where you are placing your crosshair, and the red arrow represents where the shell is actually going to land (because the game isn't automatically correcting for shell drop.) Moving your reticle between these two states will cause this "jumpy" phenomenon.
This is also why most people are awful at leading targets: if you have to aim past the tank to lead a moving target, you also have to compensate for shell drop or your shot will likely fall too low, either hitting the tracks for 0 damage or hitting the ground.

I've noticed what the OP describes, and it seems tied to terrain features, which is what several replies discussed. The jump seems to avoid certain terrain features...that is, you can aim above or below them, but not right at them. I don't entirely understand why that would be, but it's a fairly consistent behavior when my depression angle is limited. I don't think it's avoidable...just has to be lived with is my sense.

Well if you go on menu then settings you can unable it so basically when you fire your entire tank doesnt move when in sniper mode

I think you are talking about compensation, since at very long ranges the shell starts to drop so you have to aim a bit higher to hit your target.

Only one person has mentioned that this is from being in third person, and your reticule "jumping" from near objects to far. This is what you're experiencing.
Essentially, you can't aim at things in between because they are blocked by some object in front of you...a rock, a house, a rise of a hill, etc.
Next time it happens switch to sniper view, and you'll see whatever the obstacle is that is in your way and why your reticle "jumps" when you raise your gun barrel to point over it.
