Hello everyone!

I recently found an interesting experimental variant of the Abrams while poking around the web. If there is already a thread about this, I apologize, but I included some other things too.

So, the thing is called the Abrams CATTB (Component Advanced Technology Testbed). It apparently was made in the 80's, with a new engine, (I think it's a diesel) a modified hull, and most noticeably, a larger, more heavily armored turret mounting a 140 mm smoothbore gun, complete with an automatic loader!

Delete the parts that might hint that you want the tank in-game. QUICKLY. For your own good.

Cool tech tree, though.

The hull looks like a weak spot, since u can shoot the tip of it and most likely pen. ( the IS-3 has the same problem: shoot the " pike " of it's armor and u will pen )

Nice tech tree by the way

Or a 155mm derp gun. If we didn't have all these "avoid collateral damage" things.

I don't think we'll see any majorly larger caliber tank cannons unless a new world war breaks out.  Even then the latest trend is toward stealth, speed, and versatility.  Rumor is that the M1A3 is way lighter than the M1A2... or might be, if it exists.

Then there's also the Stryker 105mm auto tank destroyer. or the "Mobile Gun System"

So where I kinda wonder how much penetration a 140mm could get using a modern style DU penetrator, the 120mm works really well now.  And if the difference between a 120 and 140 means you don't need an autoloader, more rounds per minute, without sacrificing much penetration and weight.  It makes a lot of sense to go with a 120 instead.

Like the 152 mm gun/missile launcher that was on the M551 and M60A2?

140mm rounds are freaking huge. Autoloader is a must for one-piece 140mm ammo. IIRC the swiss 140mm could do 1 meter @ 2km in the 90's (although I could be wrong about the date) - but what can't M829A3/DM-63 kill?

Those were different - more of a tube for launching ATGMS, the gun bit was secondary and ruined it as a good ATGM launcher. the 165mm demo gun fitted to M728's would be closer, although the 120mm M908 round is just as good if not better at destroying concrete so there is little point in a dedicated demolition gun these days.

Spoiler

This would be a very hard decision to make to install the 140mm. The ETC technology is still being developed : http://en.wikipedia....ical_technology

This is to reduce the need for a 140mm gun by increasing the effective power of the gun. Thus 140 would be a stop-gap option if this tech cannot be fulled developed, in the mean time.

Remember, the 140 mm was only on the CATTB, which was an experiment done in the 80's; it never was used in a service vehicle and I doubt it is still being toyed with. I think you might be confusing this with the M1A3.

EDIT: I'm also not sure whether this gun used ETC or not, my guess is that it didn't, and that it's the "Interim" solution mentioned in the article. "XM291" was probably an error.

It has a similar chassis and turret.  Not sure about the gun.

atm they're experimenting with a leopard 2 which carry's a 140mm with a predicted muzzle velocity of 3000 m/s just like the Russians which are experimenting with their 152mm's but it will still probably take a few decades till those things see the battlefield or even more
btw as Thundersaver said they are still developing other ways to increase the power of the gun like Railgun's, ETC
Spoiler
Just the same thing only now by the Germans
