Premium Tank crew switching

I read that switching my crews in and out of the primum tank I don't have to retrain them. I have a KV5 and just got a KV-1s when I move the KV-5 crew to the KV-1s their training % is all red still?

you don't suffer any penalty if you put a KV-1s crew on the premium tank KV5 but you will if you put a KV5 crew on any other tank you will be penalized

It only works when you drop your crew from a standard tank into a premium tank.
You can leave your crew trained for your standard tank and run them in your premium.
They will get full XP when they run in the premium and they don't suffer any performance penalties.
It is a great way to push your crew back up to 100% after you switch the tank that they are trained for.

I've always been confused on this one.
In the case above. You put your KV-1S crew in the KV5 and they still perform and advance as normal even though they show red?

No. The OP has a KV-5 trained crew showing red in the KV-1S. He needs to retrain the crew to the KV-1S and then he can toss them into the KV-5 w/o penalty.

essentially it goes like this
any tank crew = no penalty on premium tank
premium tank crew = penalty on any other non premium tank
any tank crew = no penalty on premium tank
premium tank crew = penalty on any other non premium tank

It should be noted that the crews must be from the same type of tank. A Heavy Tank crew put into a Premium Medium Tank will still be penalized, but not if put into a Premium Heavy Tank.

I dont have a dedicated crew for any of my premium tanks. Type 59 breaks that rule but thats it.
eg. KV5 has no "KV5 crew". It always has other heavy Russian crews rotated through it.

As a general rule of thumb, when you buy a premium tank, DON'T buy a crew to put in it. Instead, take the crew from one of your other tanks of the same nationality and class into the premium and use them. They will function as well as they did in the tank they were trained in, and acquire experience as you play them in the premium.
Remember, they have to be the same nationality and tank class.
