The IS is a bit more durable (armour vs tier) than the KV-1s, AFAIK it can't, literally, one-shot any mediums that it meets, where as I know the KV-1s can one-shot things like M4s and Lees.  Basically, when you have a great game in the KV-1s, it'll be better than a great game in the IS.  But that doesn't mean the IS is a grind.  I like it about as much as a like my T29.  My goal is to get the IS3, though, so I'll sell the IS when I've researched the IS3.  The KV-1s I'm keeping, because when I'm top tier, it's a ton of fun blasting lower tier tanks with that awesome 122.

BTW, I definitely notice the difference in reload time between the IS and KV-1s.
