Arty Aiming Ellipse is Very "Slippery...

_nano's Photo _nano Aug 27 2012

Why is an elongated arty aiming ellipse so "slippery" on the back of the target tank?  Its practically impossible to put the center dot in the right place.  Do I need to turn down my pointer speed in the mouse control panel?  Does that help anything?

Dont aim with the green dot,aim with your mouse(the cross in the middle of the screen). The dot is the place where the shell would fall, not the trajectory.
For example:you aim at the turret, but the dot falls behind the tank, thats fine ,because the shell has to pass through the tank to fall in the place where the dot is.

Actually when running arty I tend to am a little long. That is my way of compensating for the height of the tank. The "slipperyness" is due to the tank itself. When you slide your aim accross it goes from aiming at the ground, to aiming at the tank, back to aiming at the ground. You just have to learn to compensate for it.

But yet people say Arty is too easy to play...

As SebastianCole said, this occurs because when your gun changes from aiming at the ground to aiming at the tank. This is especially noticeable when you are firing at a very low trajectory (as you said), and when the target tank is very tall.

You can get around this in two ways:

  • When you aim at a tank at low trajectory, the center dot moves behind him, which makes the shell more likely to hit. To prevent the reticle from jumping around, you can simply aim the center dot behind the enemy tank manually.
  • If the target is moving, you can place the reticle in front of him, and then hold the right mouse button. This will lock the gun in place, so the reticle won't jump when he passes under your cursor.

The most helpful tip I have read on here was to place the center pip *behind* the enemy tank rather than on it. Have the shell fall through them toward the ground on the far side.

If you are at low tradgectory the rule about the back of the tank being the best aim point goes out the window. At low trajectory it is better to go for the turret.

Think about it

when im aiming as arty with an elongated aiming reticle, i try to have the green dot on the ground behind the tank, but the green line that represents the path of the shell, going thru the turrent, or highest part of the tank.

also, if the target disappears when u r aiming the point of impact moves forward slightly. when this happens, i move the green dot back to where it was before the target dissappeared, and then fire

My tactic is to start aiming BEHIND the tank, then slowly move the center dot toward the tank, stopping right before it touches the tank. Hard to do on moving targets (have to lead your shots) but very useful on a stationary tank.

End result looks like this sort of
