I have enough xp now to unlock the 85mm, my question is should I unlock and install it? I seem to be doing fairly well with the 122 averaging 2 kills a game which is far better than any of my other tanks. Just not quite sure if I should risk it or save the points for something else. And yes I already have tracks and first engine.

i would say get the 85 mm, its much better for fighting other tier 5 heavy tanks. and in most cases, thats what you will be facing.

It's up to you and your playstyle. Personally, I roll with the 85mm but if you like/ have more success with the 122mm they by all means keep it on. The best thing to do would be to try it out for a few battles and see if you like the gun. Again, it all depends on how you play your tank.

122 = auto-aim.

Not saying the 122 is bad, but it doesnt require much logic on most of the cases.

85mm has a higher RoF, DPM, and Pen. You can do fairly good on this one.

I had 8 kills on 8 shots with the 122mm. Can't do that with an 85mm.

Derp all the way.  I love trolling T5 matches in the KV-1 and all I use it the 122mm derp.  I actually got 2 kills in a T7 match using the 122mm.  I did however unlock the 85mm as I like to elite all my tanks but that is something not everyone does.

I would consider 57mm with new tight MM.

The 122mm is a much too underwhelming derp for my tastes. If you want to derp, go KV-2 and derp like a man! The 85mm is a much much more consistent weapon and is better practice for the future of your tank line.

Be the man! Derp with AP! ( it is really fun to load pure AP load sometimes ).

Well after more than a hundred games in my KV-1 and swinging back and forth between the 85 and the 122 I gotta say I much prefer the 122. Not only does it one shot just about everything my tier or lower, it does really well in high tier matches, an area of the game where I seem to play the majority of the time. If I have the 85mm on then yes I can still get good kill when I am Top Tier, but when I am bottom tier all I do is bounce bounce bounce. At least with the 122 I have a fighting chance.

And yes I play the KV-2 and I LOVE that tank. It is so much fun to play and see big tanks go BOOM!! with one shot. However, I went straight to loading HE rounds like I do with my other derp guns, didn't think about loading AP. Is it really that effective?

Also one last little tidbit. I don't auto-aim anything unless I am running for cover and trying to distract them or I am circling a tank and need to focus on driving. You can do even more damage with a derp if you aim for the sweet spot, and you can still bounce if you don't.

122mm is not good enough, imo.

You do not have speed of PzIV(or aim time, or accuracy, really) to reliably flank and pen enemy's rear with it.

Might as well go 85mm.

Only party-approved derp gun is 152mm which is much more effective(on paper 122mm seem to do more with faster rate of fire; but in reality HE mechanics means less shot + more damage per shot is better).

Against what cannot be penned, 122mm performs much worse due to flat decrease in damage from enemy armour every shot.
And at spots you do decent(half) damage with 122mm on; you can probably pen with 85mm.

After 8.1 it might be advisable to use the 122mm using HEAT (for credits, expensive but viable with that alpha).

85 and 57 cant do much in the T7 battles you get into. And too slow to flank and spank.

What i did was bought a bunch when they are on sale(gold) and use them sparingly when i feel the outcome of the game could be decided.  I solo'd a tiger ("P" i think) using gold, he was pissed.......

Once they go silver i would expect most player will do the same, and unless if you are just stupid with shooting them the KV-1 makes(for the most part) enough money to support light HEAT use.

I use the 85 with rammer and i killed 8 tanks with it in a single game shooting from long distances. In tier 7 battles i bounced shots from IS and from a T29 and give them some shots that didn't bounce (you just know where to shoot).

Have more fun with the 85mm myself but in a match with a lot of T8 on enemy side it takes some good tanking to get to their flanks and rear ends to pen with it, totaly dominate the odd time I'm top teir.
122 too slow to aim and reload but sometimes I wish I had it for matches full of T8's and often loose with it due to not enough ROF if I'm the top tier.

I've never seen a tier 8 in my KV-1 (or any other tier 5) since 7.5's MM.

Tried em all, and the 57 is the best in the current environment in my experience.
