Hello All,
This week we look back at the Battle of Peleliu. Referred to by those in the know as, "the bitterest battle of the war for the Marines," it was a controversial battle because of the island's questionable strategic value and the high casualty rate, which was the highest for U.S. military personnel of any battle in the Pacific War.

If you'd like to get a Marine's(who was there) take on this battle , check out "With the Old Breed" by E.B. Sledge . He was with the 1st Div. 5th reg.. Book also  describe's the Battle Of Okinawa.

A Peleliu map, with an airfield and jungle would be great. We need more battlefield-like maps, and less shiny cities.

Read Islands of the Damned. Great book. Written by E. B. Sledge's sergeant during Peleliu.

A huge thanks to Chieftain for writing the article and to Mugsy for posting it.The theatre from WW2 I love to read about most is the PTO,so this was a treat.I am also wondering if this isn't some kinda tease for the entrance of Nippon into the game??.I know the British are up next(which I am stoked for)but it is not inconceivable for those lovely clackity-clack clack clack's of the Japanese tanks headed our way soon?.I would really love to see a map of the battle of Nomonhan.

My father was at Peleliu, he came in the second wave. He recounted how the Japanese had pre targeted the beach zone , They hit almost every single AMTRAC coming in. He is actually in one of the photos you see in the history books, its the one with the Marines entrenched in the coral and a squad of marines going up an enbankment on a small ridge. He ended up getting wounded when a squad  he was in went into a cave and a jap soldier came at them with a grande and detonated it, No one died but the Jap, but my dad did get shrapnel wounds.

btw...Im sure we can expect some Pacific Maps soon? It would be cool if the Philippine Map from '42 could be redone . Tanks/Arty vs a DD,Pt? Im sure the community would like something like that down the road

Lol. "Casualties were high, and almost approached the Japanese total casualties of 10,695 killed and 202 captured" But the U.S. had " 1,794 killed, 8,010 wounded or missing." Considering probably half those "casualties" were some what superficial wounds. I would not say that the Japanese "approached" us at all. I would suffice to say we destroyed them. Thats almost a 10 to 1 kill ratio. No disrespect to all those who fought and gave their lives there but.... We killed almost everyone on that island. Hahahaha.. Are you crazy?

My Dad got his Bronze star and two purple hearts on Peliliu in some bloody battles. My Dad coulodnt be prodded into talking about these battles he would open up drunk a few times. He survived the whole pacific invasion on every beachead in the pacific battles. Each was more horrific the closer they got to Japan and surviveing human wave attacks continously. I can only admire the courage and bravery involved each man has his own stories of his own time in hell. An epic battle but one of many to conquer the Japanese invasion.

Having watched the miniseries and read the book, as well as Eugene Sledge's "With the Old Breed" and Robert Leckie's "Helmet for my pillow" I have nothing but respect for those who fought and for those who died on Peleliu - on both sides. As a combat veteran I can say that "war is hell" - but I am glad I did not have to serve on Peleliu. What I faced was a Sunday afternoon picnic by comparison. Respect. Lest We Forget. Thank you Chieftain, thank you Mugsy.
