I think he's talking about the ducting for the turret blower, just aft and right of the TC's hatch. Last time I was asked that question, it was described as looking like the film advance lever on a camera.

chieftain, since we are on it, what are the two square things in front of the gun compartment on the t92 arty?
And what was the obsession of putting logs on russian tanks?

The logs are unditching beams a poor man's tank recovery vehicle .The beam is chained to the tracks in the front or rear and dragged under the tank to free itself .

Tankers wanted a piece of mother russia to go to combat with them. The bigger the log, the better morale the crew had.

I wouldn't necessarily say "poor man's" recovery vehicle - since Russia is huge it could take hours or half a day for the regiments recovery vehicle to get there, and risks getting stuck itself of course. What unit commander would want a vehicle out of commission vulnerable to artillery fire or aircraft for that long?

so why didnt the other nations use it? too proud?
They did - Usually, there were trees wherever they went ... or they had a better ratio of Recovery assets, like 4:50 instead of 1 or 2:100.
Not so across much of the Soviet Union, so the Russians carried their logs with them ... Mired or Bellied tanks were left behind in the advance - crews were responsible for their own recoveries, unless they had suffered immobilizing battle-damage.

The British invented the tank , and the unditching beam soon after .It wasn't a insult husband , I think a recovery vehicle and its crew are preferred.
