A while back I posted my Ode to noobs. Here's my sort-of-an-ode to mediocre players. You know, the faceless masses. Players that might be bad, but not so bad they become legendary. Players who might be good, but not good enough for eternal fame and recognition. The 45% - 55%'ers. The meat of a team. The pubbies.

I was playing earlier with some music on, and got horribly murdered amidst my dead teammates. At that moment the chorus of the song that I was listening to came on ...

Once we were eager and partners in crime,
Now we are lonesome and wasting our time
Imprison our minds in the land of the dead
Bemoaning the life that we all could have led

We are lifeless, pale and numb
We are all the same now!

And these words, watching my dead tank burn in a graveyard of dead teammates while the unicum that killed me trundled off to farm some more meat -

- ... It just fit.

The song is originally about the hum drum, dreary, boring life of a corporate paper-pusher going forever unappreciated for his efforts, someone who could only dream of glory - but I figured it fit for the great mass of average players in WoT, too.

We'll kill someone, we'll get killed by someone, and the next battle nobody even remembers our names. Under our feet, the terribads struggle and over our heads, the unicums walk. We are the masses. We are the average.

And without us, there would be no game.

I don't know how I feel about being a "pubbie" as a 55%er. I make a hell of a lot more difference than the average pubbie, and am much more often than not top 1-3 in terms of exp. Unless of course by pubbie you mean someone who runs purely pubs, which I don't, but I do the majority of the time.  At least I won't be in your made up category for the long term though. Good post otherwise, and good song. I'm not really out for glory, or for recognition, but it's at least nice to hear that we make the game :D.

45ers aren't mediorce. 45ers are terribad. As are 46ers usually. I would start mediorce at 48% and 54% and higher is pretty good if it is all from pubs. Imho the closer a winrate is to 50%, the more difference in skill is signified by one percent.

Aw, thanks, Lert!  Some battles my play sucks a lot, other times just a little or not at all but no one would remember me.  Don't mind these other guys picking at nits.  It's just nice to get some recognition!

I'm with some others above who say... great post, but the "Mediocre" players are really 48% to 52%. I've watched replays of some 47% players, and sweet jeebus it can be frustrating. Anyone 53% or above (which doesn't include me) isn't necessarily unicum but they're making a big difference on their teams.

And then there is forum fame which will get you killed faster regardless of your stats, immediately  after a cheery "Hi Lert!"

Where 'bad' ends and 'average' begins, where 'average' ends and 'good' begins, it's all arbitrary, and not relevant to the message of the thread.

Yes! These times when I'm recognised I can atleast, from time to time, feel like I'm not part of the masses, but something speshul. And then I get horribly murdered.

Exactly! The unicums wouldn't even have a game to play if it weren't for the average masses, of which many pay to support the game. I think it would be hilarious to see what would happen if everyone with a <55% win rate didn't play the game for 1 day!

I will tell this to the guys bragging about their 58% WR the next time I meet one.

"You might be a unicum... but without me, who would you kill?"  :Smile-hiding:
