I love my ELC AMX and would reccomend doing medium if you can survive tiers 1-4.

Depends on what you want... and this time don't try to tell us we're wrong if you don't like our answers.

Lights - Fast, no armor, auto loader gun. Suitable for a flanking play style, but lack of armor means there's no room for error.
Heavy - Same as above, slower but bigger guns. EDIT: Notice I said slower, the French have the fastest heavies in the game.
TD - Incredibly amazing guns, armor becomes redonculous at higher tiers.
SPG - No idea
The French are very unforgiving, make a mistake or find yourself in the wrong position and your lack of armor will not save you.

French tanks need support, if you are the solo 'hero' type player, then it is not for you (SPG not included). Autoloaders on heavy and medium line need some getting used to (only the Tier 10 TD has one), I would recommend going upto the AMX 12t, it is a fairly good representation of the French playstyle.

mobility and general people raging at you.... the med line
some semblance of mobility, mostly frustration on your end and under performing versions of the med line (exception 50 100).. the heavy line.
area denial, and a final tier that will make any tier 10 back up immediately upon spotting you (with the drawback being every arty they have suddenly pointing at you)... the TD line
the most agile coward cannons in the game are french (and the bat 155 is typically the most annoying)
brief and crude summary.

He only has 566 battles, so there is a good chance he doesn't know what he likes!
My suggestion to the OP, is to watch some replays of the various tanks you are interested in playing, and try to determine if what those tanks can do appeals to you. There are tradeoffs between mobility, firepower, and ability to take a hit among all tiers. Characteristics of the tanks determine an optimal playstyle, which you will be shoehorned into (if you wish to succeed. You can always play your IS-7 like a scout and win 39%)
Aquavolt has good points. The French are unforgiving, and it could be prudent to play another line of tanks (at least partially) before playing French tanks.
As a rule though... the lighter the tank, the better the mobility. The heavier the tank, the better the ability to take a hit. TDs have the best firepower, but generally lose turrets, armor (and HP).
LTs are generally the hardest to play with HTs the easiest.
If I had to do it over again, I'd do the USSR IS-7 line first, up to the IS-3. Then I'd prob do the USA mediums up to the T20 or M26. Then I'd decide if I wanted a tier 10, or if I wanted to try LTs or TDs. The German TD line can be pretty solid for learning TDs, as they can take a hit.

I recommend the medium line if you like a fast mobile flanking war. If you can survive tier 1-4, AMX 13 75, and stock Lorraine, they become enjoyable.
The heavies are difficult to grind, but at top tiers they are capable of dishing out the damage.
The TDs... From what I've seen, the AC's are fast and well armored from the front, but have poor sides/rear.
The arties deal less damage than other nations' but have better mobility, aim time, and RoF.

What is your playstyle?
IKR...Just love the players that ask what is best.
I'm better in the TD's, Some heavies (Non auto loaders) and ok in the lights and arty. Does that mean you will be? You need to try them out for yourself and see. Not like it cost you anything but time...
