Welcome to High Explosives 101, the most poorly utilized part of your gun in WOT. As most of us know, tiers 4 to 7 typically possess the option to use a large and shortbarreled howitzer, capable of firing HEAT and High Explosive shells. While it's use as a HEAT lobber is well known, today I'll be posting a poorly drawn guide to using standard HE rounds to their fullest.

Section 1. HE Mechanics.
  • High Explosives shells draw a cone from their point of impact through the tank, targeting the weakest available section. This in contrast to the previous "Bubble" that HE drew, which allowed it to infallibly seek out tank weak spots.
  • When a High Explosive Shell hits armor, it does not take angling into account. It's simply HE Pen versus the plate. If the HE pen exceeds the armor thickness, it penetrates for massive damage, dealing the full amount listed along with severely harming internals, thanks to the previously mentioned cone.
  • A non penetrating HE shell has its damaged halved, and deals two less damage per mm of armor it is unable to penetrate. For example, if an 10.5 CM derp hits a 80 mm plate, its damage will first be halved from 410 to 205. Then, 64 will be subtracted from 80mm, leaving us with 16mm of un-penetrated armor. We subtract two points of damage per MM, leaving our average shell damage at 173. The formula is (Dam/2-(Thickness-Pen)*2).
  • An HE shell that is powerful enough can deal minor splash damage to nearby tanks. In practice, only powerful 152mm or higher guns will have sufficient HE to make this something to take into account.
Section 2: Where to shoot.
  • You see a T1 Heavy Tank approaching, full tilt. Derp in hand, you prepare to lob your first shell. It's time to shine. WRONG. The front of a T1 HT has 83mm of frontal armor, and your gun isn't accurate enough to aim for weak spots. That ain't happening.
  • You see a T1 Heavy Tank moving by, his side armor bared. Where do we shoot?

Tracks are shot-munchers. As the most common form of armor spacing in the game, consider them the worst enemy of any form of High Explosive shell, be it standard or HEAT. Frontal side armor tends to be somewhat stronger than rear side armor, so it's an option, but go for the rear whenever possible.
  • I'm above someone! What do I do? You fire that shell straight into their top armor for full damage, that's what you do. Most tanks it's better to aim for the rear, but in the rare occasion that it's an open topped Tank Destroyer or Artillery Piece, drop it into the turret instead.
And as a final note:
  • This HE mortar has kind of a weird arc to it. Can I shoot it over hills? Why yes, random newbie, yes you can. It takes some practice, but there are few things more amusing than lobbing a derp onto a tank he thought was safe.

Did not know this, nice topic! When I get back in the game I could stuff my tanks with 3 HE shells, and use that to my advantage.

I normally don't even use HE except when I need to reset cap. But that's a nice guide.

a reminder, while only the KV-2 with the massive, slow-loading 152mm is a true "Derp" gun.  Many tier 4-6 tanks have a 105mm 'mini derp' that may actually be the very best gun to take.

The Hetzer, the M4 Sherman, the Panzer IV, and to a lesser extent the Sau-35, Wolverine and Stug III are just better with these guns

I know most things about WoT, I just didn't know about the special HE lob. I didn't know you could do that in tanks that ARE NOT TROLLTILERRY.

It's very tricky to do in standard practice, British howitzers are the easiest because they lob at suck a high arc, while Germans are the hardest with their HV guns.
