What would you go back and tell your new-g...

Enaris's Photo Enaris Jan 29 2013

If you could go back and talk to your 1000-battle into the game self, what would you tell him?  What hints and tricks do you wish you'd passed on much earlier. (Also, maybe some of the stuff here could be useful to the current crop of new guys, so keep that in mind also).

When I first got into game, I fixated on the SU-76. I'd played it in the late stages of Open Beta, and had fallen in love.  While I've played it a few times since then, I'd say that 80% of my SU-76 Battles were within the first 90 days of launch.  Looking back, I think it taught me many good lessons about the game, but it also taught me some bad ones.  The worst of those came from not really considering the fact that I was running a very good crew against a bunch of guys grinding out the low tiers with 50-80% crews.  There were many "great" hiding places I used to live in that really don't work against 100% crews. It took me a great deal of relearning to adjust to that.

So, the first thing I'd pass along to my "new" self is the need to advance at least high enough to see how full crews and visibility affect the game.

Second?  Maximize your minimap.  Always keep it in mind. (I always used it, but the extra size is seriously handy).

Third?  Always keep this in mind "Your gun should always either be aimed at an enemy, or you should be considering how to move to get shots".  There are times you need to watch a backside flank, but most of the time, and idle gun is a wasted gun.

That's just me, and I'm sure everyone else has different lessons, so what do you say?

Don't waste your credits on the French tanks

And keep tanks around until you at least unlock all the tanks that you can from it

These three apply heavily to me.

I broke my teeth on the KT. A quick look at my profile shows it waiting to be redeemed.

I would tell him a few things.
  • Credits matter more than experience. You can always count on getting at least some experience every game, but not the same with credits. You can have good games where you earn a lot, but then you can have games where you don't earn as much or even lose credits. In the long run, focus on credits and you'll be set.
  • The 'X' key locks hull rotation for non-turreted vehicles. I seriously have just figured this out almost 3k battles in, and I would have been so much better off knowing it two thousand battles ago.
  • Save free XP for getting vehicles out of stock. If I'd known this, I wouldn't have knackered my winrate in the KV-1 because I went into the first few battles with only the engine upgraded. Now that I know this things are easier, but I could have saved myself so much trouble if I'd known it then.

I would go back to my 0 battle self.

1) I would explain in detail spotting mechanics
2) Teach him everything about arty and how to avoid it
3) Ensure he knows all weak spots and how to abuse/protect them
4) Let him know all the great spots to setup on the maps.

This is not Spearhead. Don't go alone.
Have patience. The game lasts 15 minutes. You don't have to get killed 1 minute into the game.
Ignore the scouts unless you are the only tank protecting art. They'll distract you and get u kilt.
And you thought from all the WW2 history you'd read the German tanks were best. Hah. Had you fooled.

Just two words

PLAY WISE.

bronco330's Photo bronco330 Jan 29 2013

Hmm, let's see. The first things that come to mind are:

1) Be patient, especially in the beginning/middle of a match. Many times it's better not to trade one hit for another and instead to wait for an opportunity to hit the enemy when he won't be able to get a shot back in return.

1a) That said, don't be afraid to take a hit if that's what it will take to blow the flank wide open for your team.

2) Even if you know that the "best" strategy is to do X, if no one goes with you, you will run into multiple enemy tanks and die quickly. If you're going somwhere where you are likely to run into more than you can handle alone, always make sure that you have friendly tanks who are in a position to support you.

3) Use right-click to look around while freezing your gun in the direction you expect to need it to fire next. In addition, get the mod that allows you to zoom out farther so that you can look around corners and see whether the enemy is turning his gun away from you or if he has just fired. (opportunity to strike)

4) Play a variety of tanks and styles through tiers 1-4ish so that you get a feel for different tank types (especially TDs and arty), both so you find out what you like and so that you "know your enemy" and what he is capable of doing.

5) Once you hit tier 5-6, don't try to continue playing through every line. You'll only burn yourself out. Pick one or two and focus on them.
