Pretty standard topic.
Nothing too nooby.
I need a veteran to explain this.

From a Hummel.
My guess here is that the pen hole is just misplaced, and he really hit my front plate...
But what if it's not?
Shouldn't that have bounced?
Or is that armor just that weak?
Looks to me like the shell would have torn a bit at the front plate without doing too much damage, but he killed both my driver and gunner with that shot.
Must have been an HE.

A Hummel's HE shot wouldn't have penned there, so that was a heat shell, with a really freaking lucky shot. I've seen those kinds of shell holes before, but never from an arty shot.
I've survived more than 6 arty shots. Whaddya mean a Priest can't do much to a Kv-4?

I don't think that's a pen, I think that's a ping. It's the right angle to have scraped along, and then detonated under your tank. The armor is paper thin on the bottom, and that would explain the dead crewmen as well. A penetrating shot there could kill the driver, but I think the gunner (in the turret) would be OK. From the bottom going up, though, they are both fair game.

Given that shells are "supposed" to bounce automatically after 70 degrees (Devs said that when they talked about penetration in that one mechanics video. It seems though that this isn't always accurate), I would assume that it hit here, exploded on the outside, and did massive damage due to how weak the armor is there

Maybe your Gunner droped his glasses arround the Clutch/Breaks paddles so he and the driver might be down there searching for his glasses WHEN SUDDENLY impossibru happend.

And, if anyone is curious, I survived the battle.
So did the Hummel...

except when the bore of the weapon exceeds three times the armor thickness. so a 50m plate will be penned even at 89 degrees by a 155mm round.
Actually this is probably the explaination. It just barely hit and by rights should have just grazed the hull without penning but because the arty weapons bore is so large, the RNG registered it as an autopen and the game didn't know how to draw the pen hole correctly.
