Can you use your mouse to steer your tank?

scottiefl's Photo scottiefl Feb 19 2013

Can you change settings to use your mouse to steer your tank? If not, then I will have to use only TDs and artillery.

I am really lousy using A and D to turn anything in a computer game.

that isn't a good idea, because there would be no way to traverse your turret if you do that

I don't think it would be possible to bind your mouse to turning direction, although from experience I think you should leave it the way it is. Personal preference is personal preference and I don't want to make you feel like you have to change that, but being able to move the turret separately from the rest of the tank is something you don't want to pass up.

Using the mouse to aim is more precise than using the keys. Get more than 14 battles and you'll get better at using the mouse and keyboard.

You can use the arrow keys, but they are not accurate.

Yes, sorta.  You can map your keys and mouse buttons, but afaik just the LMB and RMB not the middle button/wheel.  And you can assign them to movement, but then you would still have to have two movement keys (as there are fwd, bckwd, left and right) and also assign two keys to replace the default mouse buttons (fire and auto-aim).

I suggest mapping the movement keys to someother keys you're more comfartable with.  You'll find it under Settings > Controls.

Good luck.

I not good either at using the keys to move a tank. You could try to reassign some keys in place of the normal ones to move. Although I experimented with that , but didn't find much luck.

That's another point I overlooked.  While afaik you could still traverse your turret via moving the mouse and using the buttons for two movement choices it would be imho very confusing.  And as the other player said, you'll get more accustomed to the current (or a different key layout should you choose so) layout with more games I imagine.

EDIT:  And like the earlier poster while I haven't tried it I have heard mention of using game controllers.

OP these links might help.  Parse through the entire threads as there's more advice/info than in just the opening posts, good luck.

WoT was the first game I played using WASD controls and I sucked at it at first.  Completely unnatural!   So I played sniper tanks for a long time and avoided brawling.  Eventually it becomes almost second nature even though I still make mistakes driving from time to time.  Just stick with it because it does take some time to get used to and I can't think of a way that would work better than the standard method.

Yes. Play tank destroyers with no turrets. Press W, then stop, then use the mouse to turn.

Got a suggestion for you: Use an external numpad and remap the following:

1st ammo: NUM /
2nd ammo: NUM *
3rd ammo: NUM -
1st consumable: NUM 1
2nd consumable: NUM 2
3rd consumable: NUM 3
Move forward: NUM 8
Move backward: NUM 5
Turn left: NUM 4
Turn right: NUM 6

Now place the numpad whereever you are comfortable with and use it with your left hand.

It also works with a fixed numpad if you are a left-handed person and prefer to use the mouse with your left hand.
But i know how you feel. Moving from arrow keys to WASD is not easy.

Ugh.  Even TDs have some amount of travel on their barrels.

Seriously, practice using WASD and you'll quickly find that it's not as hard as you're making it out to be.

You just need to give it some time. I never played any games before WoT, never had to use WASD. It took some games to get the hang of, but you will.

You'll adapt pretty easily after 100 or so battles, using mouse for the turret is better because that actually needs to be precise as opposed to your tank which just needs a general direction.

Check out the keyboards and pads for gaming. They allow you to use left hand to steer and control speed of tank, while using the mouse & mouse buttons to control the turret/view. It's actually easy to use a pad because your fingers fit right onto the keys, not like a keyboard which is flat.
