The correct answer is:
Ping base 100 times while never turning around.

OK unicums, I have a question: suppose you're in a battle, on one of the many maps which separates the two sides with rocks or rivers etc so you can't just cut across.  You're pushing a flank with your teammates who are evenly matched with the enemy, and you're about halfway to the enemy base when you notice that the other flank has been completely overwhelmed: it's gone and a large number of enemy tanks are undoubtedly running for your flag right now.

If you go back to your base, you will be outnumbered badly, and the flank you're currently on will lose your gun and probably be defeated.  If you stay, you can fight enemy tanks for a while longer, rack up some more XP, but your team will lose (but there's a pretty good chance you would lose anyway).

So what's the move?  This exact scenario happened to me three or four times in a row last night (I was starting to wonder if I'd been cursed).  A couple of times, I went back, and the rest of my team screamed that I was an idiot for abandoning my group and we lost.  The other couples of times, I stayed, and the rest of my team screamed that I was an idiot for not going back (in a slow heavy tank, no less) and we lost.

For a hilarious answer to this - go to YouTube and google "IOC vs PBKAC Clan Wars".

A careful listener will hear (about the halfway mark) a tactically brilliant call for a flank to push....at a key moment....and then make a hilarious turn-around, about 15 seconds afterwards.   It's an instant classic !

Depends on the tactical situation.

Speed of the units left on the field. Whose side has more speed? If the enemy has the speed advantage, you MUST turn back. You cannot force a win by pushing to the base. If you have the speed advantage, one or two fast movers can keep the base busy while a heavy can anchor the defense, let the rest push.

As was said by everyone else, it depends on your tank, your hp, your location, the enemy location/numbers/hp. In my experience if you can get back you need to try to do so. Hopefully you are reading the map better than just seeing your last tank went poof and that is when you start to head back, but even if your not ask what tanks they had there(unless you have the minimap mod) and ask what their hp was and see what you can do. Unless you are in a large slow moving heavy/td that just won't make it back or you are right at the enemy cap it pays to go back. If you teammates were at all useful the enemy is going to be beat up, so a healthy tank will be able to counter a lot of beat up tanks.

Always assume that any resetting will be done either by you, or nobody.  Your teammates aren't gonna do it for sure.
