And 1 Degree is still 17.77...8 mils no matter how you look at it. 360 degrees = 6400 mils so not hard to see there is only one right answer. if there was more than one real answer, by that logic, thats like saying i could buy gas for 25 cents instead of 3.41 a gallon cuz theres more than one right answer. I did marine towed field arty for a living and was extremely proficient and no one (not even guests from other countries) told anything different than that.

Funny you should mention the gas comparison. Did you know that cars in the UK get more miles to the gallon than in the US? They define gallons differently.

As I said, NATO standard. It's an approximation because doing mental arithmetic by dividing into 6283 and a bit is too much for the average artilleryman. The Russian military uses 6000 to a circle, the closest are Finland and Sweden with 6300, but they are changing their definitions for interoperability with NATO.

What was the speed of rangefinding for a typical crew at the proving grounds?

(There probably is an official name for it, but US tankers know it as ‘choke’)

That type of rangefinder is also known as a stadiametric rangefinder.

I am a veteran U.S. Army 13B (field artillery).
In our redleg (slang for us gun bunnies) world, there are 720 mils in a circle.

Out of idle curiosity, you wouldn't happen to have the battlesight range for M829A3 handy, would you?

Battlesight Range depends also on the Terran you are in.  In a European/ North American  environment, Battlesight is still considered 1200 Meters.  Now if you where in the Desert, Battlesight increases to 1800 to 2000 Meters.

What the Army doesn't tell most people is that the M829 Series APFSDSDU has a Flat/Horizontal Range of over 23 miles. I learned that going though M1 Transition Training in 1990 from M60A3TTS.

Since the 1980's  M60A1Rise, M60A2, M60A3 Rise, M60A3TTS and All M1s have had Laser Range Finders.   Now with the Laser Range Finder and the Crosswind sensor , the firecontrol Computer will take in things like windage, and Induce Lead to the Reticle if the target is moving across your sight.  Now someone will say what happens if the Target stops moving.  You have on the Catlax ( that's what they are called) the Turret control on the Palm switches. When you release the palm switches, it drops the lead but keep the rest of the firing solution in the computer.   In the Old UCoft Sims, there is a exercise where the Enemy T-72 is Zig-Zagging coming towards you.   What the Gunner got to do, is Lase the target for the Range, and then, Dump the lead, and fire at the T-72 as he is making his turn.  That how you get past that one.
