It's not a catapult, looks too weedy to lob a 60 ton MBT.
It's not a maintenance platform, makes no sense to make it tilt and / or go so high.

So what is it?

Loading / unloading platform? Why make it tilt?

Also, I think that a 60 ton MBT lobbed at any appreciable velocity resembling 'lobbing' would impact with significantly more power than an M16's shots.

Looks to me like they're stress testing a vehicle retrieval system of some sort.

Well... Id say that if the tank turns its turret towards the sky and fires its shots at a lower velocity, it could act somewhat like an artillery unit.

Aside from that, I have no idea...  :hiding:

Thought we resolved that ... Thought you were in on it  ...

That is a mounting rig for testing GSR, thermal signature, satelite resolution, etc, etc ...

That thing is rather tiny compared to the flak-tower sized instrument platform which projects the radar down onto the vehicle ...

Testing probably works at both locations - New vehicles, or new sensing gear on the tower.

I will try to find the link ... Watch below ...

Found it:

http://www.reddit.co...nk_catapult_in/

Basically a tank lifter-upper for testing radar signatures.

Nope. Missed it.

Ah well, that's a bit anticlimactic, but that's life.

I lol'd at "power of an M16", the gun famous for not having enough knockdown power to kill in one shot.

Prior to fielding, a number of different requirements are verified, to include tie-down points for transport on trailers, rail cars, and aircraft.

Answer: Mobile Dreh-Kipp-Plattform or WTD 91. This particular one is used by the Bundeswehr to test radar signatures.

Tanks may operate via line of sight on the ground when engaging each other, but as we all know they are susceptible to other forms of attack. The radar cross section testing is not just for tank to tank combat, but how the tank may fare against, for example, air-launched or pop-up ground-launched anti-tank missiles.

BTW, seems like the Sandheim tower has infrared sensors, laser scanner, ultraviolet spectrum sensors, etc, so this is a multi-purpose testing platform. Seems good enough to actually test it out rather than rely solely on models.
