Tank History 101

The design for the Maus was suggested by Ferdinand Porsche to Hitler in June 1942 under the designation VK100.01 / Porsche Type 205. Hitler subsequently approved it as it went with his philosophy of "bigger is better" and design on it started in earnest. The first prototype which was to be ready in 1943 was initially given the name Mammut (Mammoth). This was later changed to Mäuschen (Little Mouse) in December 1942 and subsequently to Maus in February 1943

Tank History 101

The German Panzerkampfwagen Tiger II

Also more commonly known by the Allies as the Tiger II, the German Panzerkampfwagen (Armored-fighting-vehicle) Tiger II was an up-scaled version of the Tiger I. It combined the heavy armor of the Tiger I with the sloping armor of the German Panther Tank (due to me trying to keep this short, i'll skip that one). It was fitted with one 8.8 cm KwK 43 L/71Turret and two 7.29 mm Maschinengewehr 34 Guns. It was first used during the Normandy Campaign of the Allies. The 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion had 12 Tiger II Tanks and only lost 3, 2 to combat, and 1 being irrecoverably trapped after falling into a bomb crater.

Tank History 101

Due to the frequent breakdowns of the Sturmpanzer I, the Sturmpanzer II was built. Officially designated 15 cm sIG 33 auf Fahrgestell Panzerkampfwagen II (Sf) and sometimes called the Sturmpanzer II Bison, The Sturmpanzer II was built using the Panzer II Ausf. B chassis and the same gun. The first prototype was built in February 1941, however it was too cramped for use. Thus the chassis was lengthened by 60cm and widened by 32cm. This allowed it to better accommodate the gun while preserving its low silhouette. The fighting compartment was once again open-topped, however all sides were now covered, albeit the sides being lower than the front. 30 rounds for the gun could now be carried. In total only 12 were made.

Tank History 101

This is the Rhino, I am wondering how long it is going to be before these wheeled Armored Vehicles are added to the game?

When WWII started, the United Kindom was unable to meet the needs of the Commonwealth for armoured fighting vehicles (AFV), thus many of the countries developed their own AFVs. In 1941, a specification for a heavy armoured car was issued to the Australian Directorate of Armoured Fighting Vehicles Production. 2 prototype hulls and turret were built and tested on the same chassis: the CMP truck. The prototypes were tested throughout 1942, however as it suffered from excessive weight, the project was cancelled in 1943.

Tank History 101

Marder VTS1

This is quite an obscure experimental tank/panzer support vehicle, so there aren't that many images to be had. the Marder VTS1 is a tank hunter based on the Marder IFV chassis, it was a part of an effort to find a replacement for the Leopard1. The first prototype consisted a 105mm L7 main cannon, equal to that of the Leopard 1 and an autoloader to feed the cannon. It was never meant to take the main impact of an enemy attack, it was for hiding in the distance and supporting the "real" tanks. if your side had a bit fewer tanks but twice the cannons you would still have an edge on your opponent. only a few examples were made and nothing ever came of the project.

Tank History 101

Soviet WW2 Era Flame Tank

The Progvev-T is in fact a real thing. A T-54 hull with a modified MiG-15 engine on the turret mount, it was intended for using the heat and blast of the engine to sweep minefields.

It wasn't good at it, but that's what you get for not just using this thing as a flame tank outright.

Tank History 101

The M551 Sheridan Tank

The American M551 Sheridan Tank was designed to be able to land by parachute and swim across rivers. It was used extensively in Vietnam and was later retired without replacement. It had one M81E1 Rifled 152 mm Gun/Launcher, one .50 cal M2 Browning Machine Gun, and one .30 cal M73/M219 Co-axial Machine Gun. Many soldiers had their doubts about this tank, seeing as it was made with aluminum and fired caseless rounds, which meant the warhead is attached to the propellant, and the soldiers could not fire the round if the warhead separated from the propellant for some reason, which was not uncommon.
