Look up QuickyBabyTV on youtube. He actually just did a review on this tank not too long ago. Best advice for that tank is to platoon through it. It's an oversized slow medium tank.

Its a medium tank, rather slow one, but with very big gun, high HP and good armor for a medium tank.
Do not be fooled by heavy marking on it, you may try to do heavy stuff, but only when enemy have no real heavy tank to oppose you. To put it simply, you see IS-3, you die.
105mm is better choice given that accuracy got boosted and you can always sling gold.

Why are you going down the Maus line anyways?

Because some players prefer to play tanks they like as they play for fun while other are busy chasing WG carrot of new OP tank as they play for win?

Like others have said , this tank is sort of subpar as a true heavy, so think hvy med tank. It can get by with the L71 8.8(earned from tiger p) if you have to , but the alpha of the 105 will add a lot(I had all the guns unlock from the tiger 2 so I hade no problem gun wise)..   I unlocked the second turret(185mm front armor) after the track(helps any hull down fighting you do), then I got the engine upgrades.
If your prefer to get more mobility first go engines before turret
As for game play, if there's enough Heavies on the team , I play flanker with the meds and use it's mobility. If I have to play Heavy, I try to hull down and sort of play second line support if I can. Carry some premium ammo , so you'll have it if you need it.
Hopefully some others will come along to add to this, I haven't had the tank all that long(51 battles). This tank so far has been fun to play, I just need to get my damage up on this tank.
Good luck tanking.

As someone who has VK 45.02 (P) Ausf. P: GET THE TOP ENGINE ASAP. The mobility you gain will allow you basically bully any medium tanks in your path and allow you to get into position to snipe with either L/71 or L/52.

Well you could wait until they drop the VK45.02B to tier 8 and looks forward to a tier 9 Maus prototype and the Maus.

Yes, this is a big heavy.  Think of it as a medium hunter.  Or a wolf pack member.  Think of it as a flanker.  Think of it as a rammer of meds and lights.   It can snipe.  It can, at last resort, function as a heavy if you are very good at angle/wiggle and top tier.  You can change positions on the battle field fairly quickly for a heavy tank and sometimes bounce an amazing amount of shots.  It has the same turret as the Tiger II but 30mm less frontal hull armor.  All other armor is the same.
This is a GREAT tank, but you must be flexible and able to adapt to circumstances.  I find that without that approach, you will have a very difficult time in thie tank.

The huge issue I have with this tank is that we don't get the long 105 gun like the Tiger 2 and so must use gold rounds or outflank at 35km/h. At least the Amx 45 has a good gun while this tank's gun is lacking.

Like everyone else said, forget that it's a heavy and play it as a fat medium. Your armor's good enough to bounce 170-180 pen when angled and your gun will go through every tier 8 medium's hull. It's a good bully tank that can run with your mediums, penetrate the other team's and chase them down when they try to run.

Generally when fighting other heavies, you want to be flanking. If that's not possible, find a wall and hug it. Because of your frontal turret, you can pop out without exposing too much of yourself and angle your upper plate pretty far. Your 105 also gets pretty good aim time, so you can get a shot off and reverse before the enemy's fully aimed - I've soloed a 110 and KV-4 with mine. While I don't use gold often, it's good to carry some rounds for if you run into a near-death tier 10 that needs killing and isn't easily flanked.

My main suggestion for this tank is to never get into a situation you can't get out of.  You're not going to take a spot and settle down like a Russian heavy.  Get into a good spot and if you don't like what you see just leave.  Do something else where you can leverage your speed, or become a thorn in somebody's side.

Like others said, this tank requires you to keep a very close eye on the map so you can exploit weak spots in coverage and shore up losing areas.  It's not the first heavy line I'd recommend to a new player (the IS-3 is effortless to play), but it can be fun.

The L/71 will last you all the way through the tier if you are a scrooge, or you can go for more damage with L/52.

In any case, I second that you need top engine ASAP.

A heavy tank when the guys against it are less then 200mm pen, and you angle just right. A medium in the same situation would have shootable weak spots, but the Ausf A's virtue, despite having somewhat weak armor, is being weakspot free.

After 11 games I am rolling a whopping 27%wr and the only thing I am lacking is the last engine...I do okay in it avg over 1.18 kills a game, almost 1400dmg per game, but damnit if this thing isn't a fail team magnet extraordinaire...frankly I am at a loss...I am hoping it is just bad luck... As I really do like the tank.
The only advise I can give you on this tank is to side scrape with it, you can be a God if done right...

Make sure to spend a lot of time picking on ISes and KV-1Ses. Your front armor very reliably bounces their top guns and thus they're easy meat for you.

This is quickly turning into one of my favorite Tier 8 tanks. The engine is a priority upgrade.

It's not been definitively confirmed yet, just hinted as a future possibility from dev Q&A's on the Russian forums. The hull unification feature isn't coming until next year at the earliest, so I wouldn't worry about it yet.

The VK45A is a medium hunter at its finest. More than once I have killed the cocky Type 59 or IS-6 who thinks they're up against a 'bad' tank.

It's a fantastic Type hunter. Angle your armor about ~20 degrees when the Type is about to shoot. It should bounce and leave the hapless, overconfident Type to his death at your hands.
