I was in my new T-28 earlier, and I was on that battlefield where its mountainous, and there's a straight and narrow valley that runs almost the whole length of the one side of the field, surrounded by hills. I followed a couple other tanks up through there to provide support and I was one of the few tier IV's in a mostly tier V battle. Then we get stopped by an M4 hiding behind a boulder, and there were 2 other tanks behind me, one a tier V who wouldve been best suited to go after this M4.

So the M4 is down to 19%, and the guy behind me messages that I should go after him since he's only at 19%, so I moved up while dropping into sniper mode ready to shoot the guy. Even loaded a gold round just to be safe.

I move forward, and realize he's actually a little further away than I thought, maybe 30 meters, so I am ready to shoot as soon as my sights land on him, but what I saw through my sights as I moved forward was the side of a hill. I quickly realized that he was just slightly lower than I was, and that the T-28 has absolutely zero gun depression! I was aimed over his head and couldnt aim lower, so he shot me once or twice and I was dead.

Then the guy behind me continued sitting there after telling me I should attack! Wuss... Anyway, morals of the story: Dont let other players push you into doing things they wouldnt do themselves, and dont even try to attack or flank someone in your T-28 if that enemy is even the slightest bit lower in elevation.

Which tanks DO have good gun depression and are good at hull down situations? Which tanks aside from the T-28 and the T18(and most of my other tanks) have bad gun depression? The Marder 38t seems to be pretty good.

Most of the new german TDs have great depression. American heavies also have quite good depression [especially T32]

The AMX 40`s stock turret has the second best gun depression in the game I think the t40 has the most.  Also, a lot of German mediums have bad gun depression but so do a lot of the other German tanks so It shouldn't come as a surprise.

Most American tanks, German TDs, British Matilda, and the sturer Emil tier 7 paper Death Star have fantastic gun depression.

Bad depression (with exceptions): Soviet mediums, Chinese heavies/mediums/lights, German mediums.

The m2 medium has -20 degrees if I remember right and the British cruisers seem to have some of the best depression in the game.

Gun depression is such an important stat I can't believe it's not listed in game, you have to search the wiki.

If you want lines with good gun depression: Americans (pretty much all of them), German glass cannon TDs (the new ones), British Mediums.
Bad: Chinese (all of them), Russian Mediums and some TDs.
Honestly Germans and French aren't good, but they aren't horrible for the most part either so I'd call them roughly average.
Other lines very widely so I recommend checking the wiki for more information.

Dickermax I believe has the most with -15 degree depression.  Most american tanks have -10 degree depression including the T40.

Worst is the SU-101, which has 2 degrees of gun depression.

It does, but the new Pz.Sfl. V has the depression of two Dicker Maxes taped together.  Its bordering on absurd.  :)

The tier one japanese tank has the best gun depresion in the game (-22 degrees). The worst gun depression in the game would be the T92 american tier 10 arty. But the worst gun depresion in the game (non-arty) if I remember correctly, the UE-57.

Correct on the UE-57 @ -2 degrees. It has the worst gun depression, non-arty.

... but then again, that TD is only like, what, two inches high...

..j/k, I like my lil' Rat.  :girl:

A very quick jaunt through Tank Inspector will identify the gun depression for all current tanks in the game.   It's a tremendous resource for hard to find tank stats.

I'm faced with a LOT of new tanks since getting my first Tier III tank, and after a battle, I often simply "Alt-Tab" to my already open Tank Inspector to answer questions that cropped up in a battle:  Like, Why would my PzIC cover that damn Lee in hot lead and do virtually zero Damage?  Or, "How the HELL did that freakin' R. Otsu hit me from up there?"  rewsnA:  "22 degree gun depression, THAT's how, Bub!"

If ya don't have Tank Inspector, get it.  If ya have it and don't use it?  Well ... the water is right over there.  Drink ... or not.  Your choice.

...Jesse

AMX 12t balances terrible gun depression with equally terrible elevation.
