I'm just about to finish off all the upgrades for the M3 Lee.

Should I go for a T1 Heavy or an M4 Sherman first? I will get both eventually, just wondering which one people enjoy more.

It depends more of on your personal preference. Many people say that the un upgraded t1 sucks hard, but then again, so does the m4. Basically, it depends on your end game goals and weather your would rather reach for the super turret heavies, or the small fast peashooters. Then again, don't know how much end game you could possibly do since launch is rapidly approaching.

the t1 had great turret armor. Also it has decent body armor, but not way better than the m4. Depends if you are willing to trade a bit of firepower for a bit of mobility.

I haven't played the Sherman but it has to be more fun than the T1, which is pretty horrible to grind through.
You do get the occasional battle where you are the biggest tank and then it is just brutal and fun, but in any battle where your in the lower half you are basically worthless.
The US heavies seem to be pretty hard work until you get the T29, which is much much better than the T1 or M6 before it.

The T1 is just ok. I didn't really like it or the M6 (which is next). However, the grind is worth it when you get the T29. It's a beast. Slow, but it can take a punch and will pack one too, esp. with the 105. I also liked the Sherman and LOVED the Sherman 'Easy 8'. I'm in the T20 now and it's pretty nice too. Overall, decide what you'd prefer. Slow and heavy slugger or a faster, more nimble tank that can't take too much of a beating.

I have not played the T1, but I absolutely adore my sherman, especially with the 105mm gun. you need to get a suspension upgrade ASAP though, and then get the 105. It is slow as heck to start, and the starting gun doesn't do much.

The M4 is something you keep,
The T1 is something you have to play until you get the M6.

Sherman is a fun tank to play and a lot of people have not sold it after getting E8. It's well balanced with the other mediums on this level. T1 is just another step to T29. It has a very strong Soviet counterpart KV which is a MUCH better tank. T1 hvy is underpowered and you are not going keep it in your garage. BTW M4 is a good moneymaker while T1 hvy is below average and possibly the worst moneymaker on L5.

As far as enjoying a tank, the M4 is a bag of laughs. I could not even begin to describe the fun I've had in my Sherman, but I can tell you that I found it a much better and easier grind than the T1 (perhaps this had something to do with my playstyle though). With the 105, I know I can damage any tank in the game, and on occasion, hit and kill things well above the Sherman's tier. The only reason I suffered through the T1 was to get to the T29, and it was well worth the trouble. as Gabriel said, the M4 is a tank you keep. The T1, not so much.

I have played both the T1 and M4............

The T1 sucks even fully upgraded. No armor, slow, and weak gun. It's just a stepping stone to get to the T29......period......did I mention no armor and a weak gun?

The Sherman is a GREAT tank for a tier 5. Fast and hard hitting with the 105mm. Easy EXP and credit earner. I since have moved on to the Easy 8 and T20 but kept the Sherman. I still go back and play the Sherman when I need credits. The only two drawbacks are the armor but, you can make up for that in speed and playing smart, and the acceleration is a bit slow. Speed kills even the strongest tank. You get behind a heavy and their turret can't turn fast enough to keep up with you. The other nice thing is normally you will be in the top 3-5 tanks in every match. Doesn't really matter what number you are slotted with the T1 since you are just an easy kill.

It really depends on your style of play....if you like a fast tank that can be in a "wolf pack" then go with a medium. If you like slow moving and camping a lot then go with the heavy.

To clarify my post -

The T1 , when uprated, can do pretty well in game where it's near the top of the list , i.e a tier V and below and even a tier VI and below game. The 76mm is sufficient against such targets and it's armor even offers some protection. When you find yourself in the middle of the pack or towards the bottom, i.e a tier VII or VIII or God help you a tier IX/X game, you really are borderline useless. Your armor is now largely useless and if you HAD mobility, like a Sherman, you could at least go towards the 'medium' spots and try and get some flanking shots - but you don't even have that. You're a big, slow target with no armor and lackluster penetration.

The M4 meanwhile with the 105mm can damage any tank from any angle (of course you try still to aim for weak spots, but you don't need to.) at any tier. Even with the 76mm you have the mobility in 'out matched' games to tag along with other higher tier mediums and play a support role.

I have both tanks and I enjoyed m4 ALOT more than the T1. T1 is a grind and so is m6 since you have the same gun until you get the 90mm.

It all comes down to your play style I guess. Can't say I loved the T1, but it was a decent tank in my opinion. On the other hand, driving the M4 was really painful and didn't like it at all.

Try both and see for yourself.

How is the M4 fun?  Nothing else to really upgrade the tank to help me (other than the radio) and I can't seem to come out on top with it.  Gun is weak and armor is very weak.

If M4 gun and armour is underwhelming for you, don't play US tanks, they ain't for you.

You might be right.  I'll keep trying...I've only used Russian tanks and I've maxed my meds and heavy...no interested in TDs or arty.

How's the tank, that can one-shot tanks of its tier weak? Shoot anything except a heavy in the side with 105 mm and it will go "boom". Armor is crap on any T5 tank, so instead of relying on it - avoid being hit, use terrain and obstacles as cover and it won't matter.

Well, it is not like T-34 has loads of gun and armor...

I guess my problem was/is thinking it was like the almighty KV.  I put the 105 now and that has made a difference.
