SU-8

General_Dynamics's Photo General_Dynamics Jul 17 2012

Being that my laptop was what I used my First couple months of play, arty was the only thing I could use effectively on it.  I must say, my personal favorite tier V arty was my m41.  1150m range vs 950 for su-8, same damage (910-950), my m41 reloads fas more accurate, and can go almost 60km/h on flat ground.

I just unlocked the SU-8, and wow am I dissapointed. First vehicle I sprung for 100% crew on. I was dissapointed when I went from the SU-28 to the SU-5, and now again from the SU-5 to the SU-8! The accuracy on it is atrocious. It's nice having an arty that can go fast now, but it's also annoying I still haven't played an arty that can reach the whole map. You aren't able to go side to side, so you'll spot another arty and be just out of range.

The main thing for me is the accuracy. I still have the stock gun, but the bigger damage gun is even less accurate! Looking at the other arties with a 'grass is greener' glasses, the US M4A1~ looks about the same dmg/pen wise, but with way more accuracy. So far that seems to be the trend as you go up tiers, less and less accurate.... considering how long it takes to get to the next tier for these guys, what's the point? They seem to get less and less likely to hit the broadside of a barn yet require several times the xp of other tanks.

anesvick (2:34:26 PM) Victory!
Battle: Mines Wednesday, August 15, 2012 2:24:15 PM Vehicle: SU-8
Experience received: 3,684 (x2 for the first victory each day) Credits received: 61,767 Battle Achievements: Confederate, Mastery Badge: "Ace Tanker"

This is not a hard arty to use to the fullest, better arc, better aimtime and less reticle bloom when moving the tracks more than makes up for the "shortcomings" vs the Hummel and M41

I haven't played the other Tier V SPGs in the other nations but I love my SU-8.  I love it dearly.  In 350 games, I've gotten a Sniper and 2 Top Guns.  Also, Master Gunner 11--so don't worry too badly about the accuracy, although sometimes it WILL unnerve you when you have a fully-aimed in shot and it goes off the mark.  I've definitely noticed a drop in my final accuracy after 0.7.5, somehow.  Pre-0.7.5 I was accurate as heck with this SPG but recently the shots have been off more often than normal.

Yes, you definitely need crew at 100%.  But how many tanks are really especially good without a good crew anyhow?  Best thing I love about it is the acceleration.  It gets moving decently quick although it tops out at 33kph.

The SU-8 has a higher angle of attack than the Hummel, seems to do comparable damage, but in every other way I like the hummel better. The Hummel can range most maps the SU-8 can't range any map I have played on with it yet. I prefer to play counter battery, so that is a bit of an issue. I only pick up the russian line because they prefer them in CW. But I am thinking of trying the Americans, because I was more or less asked to dump the german line and pick up either the Russian or American line, and I picked Russians because I have almost nothing Russian unlocked since beta, and I have a lot of the american stuff unlocked.

Ok, I don't get how to play this thing yet, obviously, given some of the favorable comments here. So far my issues with this are:

1. Slow aiming and inaccurate -- takes a long time for the aiming ring to center on a target, and even a little motion throws the aim point off and you have to restart. Many times my stationary target twitches and I miss

2. Slow firing -- It loads veerrryyyy slowly, and there's a noticeable lag from firing to impact, quite a lag, you have to hope your target stays in one place or a LONG time to hit it

3. Low damage -- I cannot pen tanks in my same tier, and damage seems low for this gun.

4. Very slow mover -- moves like an overloaded dump truck

5. Huge -- Big lard tush SPG has trouble hiding

So, what did I miss?? This thing makes me think fondly of my SU-5!!

I hate to say this, but you don't have the number of games OR the win rate to accurately judge yet. It hasn't worked for YOU, clearly, but what has? From what I can see you're rushing through tanks way too fast, most do at first. Without a well trained crew and a decent length of experience you cannot judge a vehicle accurately.

I have almost as many games in it as you have overall and I'm running 54% in it, a full 4% over my total w/r. I average well over one kill a game and more than a thousand damage per round. And I'm barely an average player.

But I'll let you, and others, in on a secret. This baby really, REALLY responds to a well-trained crew. With 2 gunners and 2 loaders, it has great potential to be fast and accurate. When you get them all to 100%+ crew skills it's reload time AND accuracy are superior to any other arty in this tier. When the circle does tighten to it's smallest it's smaller than the AMX 13F3 by a good bit, the same with the M41. The Hummel has a nice tight circle but takes longer to get there. Add a rammer and a GLD and you can get almost 2, fully aimed, shots off for most other's 1.

Yes, it IS outranged by everyone else. Yes, it IS sluggish, and slow turning. No, it IS NOT all that good at TD mode. The high arc also causes a longer flight time and that can take a while to get the feel for. But the steep arc ALSO means you can shoot over things that others can't. And the steep arc means your shots come in more nearly vertical, which means hitting soft top armor more often which means MORE DAMAGE! Whack a M103 for 820 damage, without a ammo rack or a fire, and take him out and you'll learn to love this piece. :arta:

Ultimately, not every tank is for every player, but this one works for me, works VERY well and it will ALWAYS have a spot in my garage.

*Because of it's size I have a net as my third piece of equipment, and have high cammo skills and sixth sense on the crew as well, these help a LOT.

Edit: Also, despite the fast aim time, the shortish range make it not the best choice for CB work.

I liked the su8 for two reasons; the shot arc (you own everyone on EL halluf, and it can climb hills like crazy.  The latter is great for getting to unexpected Arty holes to avoid CB.

The stock grind for the SU-8 is horrible, the stock gun is terrible for a tier 5, but if you stick with it its the BEST DAMN ARTY THERE IS.
Fully upgraded your a force to be feared, I've oneshotted quite a few tanks with normal HE shells. Yeah its not super accurate, but if you stick with the target your going to hit him so hard he'll learn not to stand still.
This is the tier you need to learn how to avoid your fellow arty, but with the high angles and good acceleration you should do fine hiding and moving from enemy fire.
