Hello, I am new to world of tanks and so far it is a good time. one question about tiers though, when i play my newbie german light tank liechter something i sometimes go up against tanks like the pz2 and the pz(t) which are stronger german light tanks. I bought one of them but when i play it I am in a higher tier against stuff that one shots me. Why am i fighting the stronger light tanks as my newbie tank but when i play my stronger light tank im fighting even stronger tanks. How do i play the pz2 and pz(t) in the same tier as my Liechter something.

tier 1 battles tiers 1 & 2, tier 2 battles tiers 1-3, and so one, not completely sure of the rest as it seems to vary on the tank as well sometimes

I hope this image helps you understand the current matchmaking system a bit better. It shows what tanks can wind up in what tier[number] battles. You will not always be on the bottom of the pile; though, sometimes it may feel like we are consistently at the bottom at some point or another.

SPG tiers are exaggerated a bit..A tier 3 SPG isn't really equivalent to a tier 3 vehicle. It's more like 4-5. This is reflected in the EXP cost as well; the SU-8 costs 47K experience to unlock from an otherwise fully-upgraded SU-5. That's because SPGs can normally one-shot stuff of their own tier.

that kind of thing never balances out...
i am sick of being up against IS and KV-3 tanks in my pzIII
all i can gather is if you are completely outclassed you get to scout, ant thats all, unless you can find another low tier tank in a heavy game.

wait a sec why does the bison have to be two tiers ahead of the rest of the tier 2 spg's?

Not 100% sure, but I believe its because the bison can mount a 150mm gun right from the get go while both the T57 and su-18 can only mount a 76mm gun. The bison's gun has about 40 more damage than both of them and around 30 more penetration.

The Bison does a little less than double the damage per shot compared to an SU-18. It's significantly better.

Like Artillery, Light Tanks are another semi-exception to the general rule of playing against aound their own level.  They are usually considered "Scout tanks", which unfortunately means they get the dubious honor of going up against tanks twice their tier at times.  This become very noticeable at Tier 4, where you will often be amongst Tier 8.

Yes, this does mean your light tank will be up against many tanks which it cannot effect, even from behind. It's very different than lower levels, where Light Tanks can go up against most other tanks and shoot it out.

One has to change tactics/style.  One can still zap artillery if you can find them.  Also, by lighting up (spotting) enemy tanks at the time that your allies kill them, you get half the experience.  And just the act of finding the enemy for your allies helps your team deploy and shoot effectively, while the enemy is still uncertain what is going on.

But once at tier 4 Light Tanks are no longer meant to shoot it out with the enemy in most cases.

just killed a lee with my T-14

that's a tier 4 against the T-14 5,6,7

so although your source is authoritarian - its not always correct.

That's an outdated version of the matchmaker chart, IIRC.  So it's a good general example, but not entirely accurate right now.

Also, the Lee is a tier 4 medium - battle tiers 3 through 7.  T-14 is hardly an uncommon opponent for it.

It used to be, but only because of the rarity of the T14 until the special on it the last couple weeks.

Only change is Tier 5 heavys have moved down one battle tier.  http://forum.worldof...hp?/topic/41221-

So be aware tank tier does not equal battle tier

Also match maker matches Teams not tanks

Yep OP, it stays that way all the way up the tree.  Only at Tier X can you be assured of always being the top tier in every battle.

The amusing thing is, by the time you get up to such lofty heights, you will have realized that it's more fun just to play the loltraktor.

matchmaking NEEDS to be redone or light tanks need to be rebuilt
example I just unlocked the leopard and even with the top engine, suspension, turret, raido and gun its utterly usless
it's too slow too large and I don't even know why it HAS a gun mounted in over 70 battles with it I think the best Ive done is knock off 10 tracks and with a 55% hit raito only managed 6K TOTAL damage

The thing is that the light scouts (Leo, M5, T-50's...) aren't there to shoot (except maybe running down vulnerable arty or TD's).  You find advanced hiding spots, light up targets, and then the 100 ton behemoths behind you do all the hard work.
