I'm here to put an end to all this quarrel. I've played both tanks (my friend let me play on his account) and all i have to say is, When I'm in my friends IS, I get hunted down and killed by every T29 in the game. I'M NOT KIDDING. And to think what fun i was having in my T29... Anyways, all i have to say is, the 122mm is inaccurate, so its harder to aim and you basically have to hope to dear god you hit. While in the T29, its shoot, hit, repeat till kill. Russians make giant, but inaccurate guns, while Americans go with medium, accurate rifles.

If you are a sniper, or face hugger play style, go for the T29. If you are a medium range brawler, I suggest the IS. Considering that the T29 is more versatile, i would HIGHLY suggest it.

[Add-in] Bad thing is The t32 is under gunned and under armored (first turret). =(

I've never driven the IS, but I'm familiar with the T29 and it seems to dominate its tier farly well.  I'm sure a real good tanker with a skilled crew can make the difference in an IS, but all things being equal, my money would be on the T29.

Generally speaking, if it's a pure slugfest in the open in which all shots pen and do damage, the IS will win. Situationally, the T29 will almost always win.

But then again, in a pure slugfest with T29 vs Tiger, the Tiger can win. Same dpm, but 200 more hp.

Anyone here know the armor value of Tiger gun mantle? I heard it's about 200mm, and it sure acts like it.
