So i have had this happen to me 3 times now.  I am playing with my hummel, and i will spot an enemy arty location.  When i move my cursor over him, the cursor will turn grey.  If i shoot him, it will do zero damage, and if i hit in front or behind or to the side of him it wills till do zero damage.  This only has happened when targeting other arty pieces.

Grey normally means your cannon can't point in that direction (such as if the target is to far away or something is blocking your SPG from turning)

A grey cursor indicates that you do not have enough range.

no he was not out of range.  It was green in front and behind and to the left and to the right but where he was it was grey.

Maybe he was in a low spot, or behind a breastwork where you couldn't hit him?
