It's kinda obvious manually sighting it would be enormously difficult compared to using the radar

The manual system is used in case the radar encounters severe jamming by enemy aircraft jamming pods.. It isn't a back up for the radar if it goes down :)

I mean to answer this one sooner. I'm not quite familiar with a GAU-8 armed SPAAG that was supposed to be part of the requirement that the DIVAD was for. There was, however, the USAF's Air Force Mobile Weapon's System which was a concept for an M113 armed with a GAU-8 as well as Stingers. It also was supposed to use the same Ammunition handling system as the A-10.

I checked hunnicutt, it's the GE proposal I was thinking of. GAU-8A on an M48 hull, what could be better?

I hadn't heard of any M113 based GAU-8 carriers - do you have a picture of it?

The only thing I know of that combined a M113 hull with a large caliber multibarrel weapon was the prototype T249 Vigilante.  This vehicle had a "Gatling" style 37mm gun on a stretched modified m113 chassis. It was able to fire it's entire magazine of 192 rounds in 5 seconds.

Pictures here.

You know, I can't find a picture of it. From the looks of it, it never got past the design concept. The only mention I could find of it was in a 1983-1984 edition of Jane's Armor and Artillery which has an illustration of the vehicle. It looks like a VADS with a bigger gun, and illustrations of some of the other components. Namely a FLIR, VPS-2 Ranging Radar, and LSI 11M Micro-Processor. It's described as being for a requirement to defend Airbases in West Germany against Helicopter Attack and Ground based Intruders. The turret is described as a version of GE's GAU-12 gun/twin pod Stinger turret. The description of it also is a little strange in that it mentions it was to be armed with a GAU-8. Meanwhile the illustration shows that it was to be armed with a four barreled GAU-13 from a GPU-5/A gun pod and not the eight barreled GAU-8 Avenger.

The hunt for the image is on!

EDIT: Found it!

That M113 GAU-13 project was probably what formed the basis for the LAV-25 project (projects?) mounting the GAU-13 in the mid '80s.

Considering a 113 masses what, 25K pounds and the recoil force of the GAU8 is a bit more than 10K pounds, I think I see why it did not get much past proposal.

That also seems to me like one of those vehicles that would never have enough ammo to be meaningful.
