Title says it all. I was thinking the 122mm, but the lack of penetration and accuracy makes me not want to get it. The 85mm seems to have only a few mm more penetration, but maybe it has better penetration at distance than the 57mm because of its heavier shell?

I recommend 85mm. 57 is great when top tier, or when you can spend money on gold. 122 is just for lolz. More like a noob cannon. If you want a real derp, go KV-2 line.

IIRC the 85mm is my favourite, as it has a much higher RoF than the 122 and is much more accurate.

85, but for laughs try the 57.  If you get lucky and are top tier it is really fun!

85mm for best combo of accuracy, pen, and reload time

85mm. It has good pen for its tier, does decent damage, and has a reload of around 5 seconds.

85mm all the way, especially if you plan on going up the IS line, as you'll be using the hell out of it on the KV-1s and IS.

57mm is fast,, really FAST,, ram / Driver / 57mm and your shooting every 2.2 Secs,, bang bang bang bang

85mm , it will BOUNCE when you need it the most for some reason,,

122 DERP,, well Its Nice , but the Reload Sucks

Yet oddly the 85mm has more pen than the 57mm.....

Go with the 85mm since you never know if you will be top tier or not and the 57 is useless against tier 6 and 7 heavys while the 85 can still tear up a T29 pretty well if you know where to shoot him.

This is a great question.  Here is my take on it.

The 122mm derp is a good cannon for close in work where the lack of accuracy doesn't hurt you.  Slow ROF can be an issue.  Fire mostly HE shells.  This gun is less effective in higher tiers because you must attempt to stay at range so you don't get blown away.  However, you can expect to do damage with the HE rounds to higher tier tanks.  I don't like derps on most tanks including this one.

The 85mm is the best all around cannon.  It is effective at close range, middle & long range.  The gun has a good ROF & the pen (120/161) works well.  You normally have to use more premium rounds in higher tiers.  Also, the HE round will do some damage so, I add about 15 to my ammo load for low health targets & so I can do some damage to hard to pen tier 7's.

The 57mm is actually an underused gun for this tank.  ROF is excellent.  The pen of 112 for the standard round works in most situations & the 189 pen for the premium round is excellent for tier 5.  You are correct that at long ranges this round tends to fall off & doesn't pen that well.

My choices would be

1.  85mm

2.  57mm (I sometimes equip this gun, I consider it very close in quality to the 85mm).

3. 122mm

So, the 85mm is the all around flex gun for this tank.  The ability to be effective in a wide range of situations will help you win more games.  Nothing is worse than brawling away with the 122mm in a city fight & then having to make a long range shot to reset the cap with only 1 chance to hit because your reload is SO slow.

85 is dependable.  It's a solid all around gun that stays competative if you are low or high tier.

The 57 is GREAT if you are high tier.  You can tear stuff up.  It's ok if you are low tier and willing to keep a stock of premium ammo on hand, otherwise it turns to garbage.  It can be dangerous at any tier for the user though as it forces you to stay in the open to remain effective.  Sure, the DPM is great and the ROF is amazing, but having to stay in the open to make it useful is deadly.

The 122 is a joke.  Sure, it's powerful, and its fun to 1 shot stuff.  It remains somewhat useful when low tier, but all around it's a poor choice for the KV-1.

So I am going to play devil's advocate here and say that if you would have been able to take out those 3 tanks around the hill faster with less damage with the 122... It took you a really long time to kill those three tanks.

I actually got my reload down to 1.86 seconds... this gun is so much fun, especially if you know critical hit points on enemy tanks- I have killed Kv-1s' with this gun by taking out their crew when they still have more than 300 hp left.

85mm is probably the best option for the KV-1.

The 57.  Always the 57.  The average penetration difference between its standard AP round and that of the 85 is a whole, whopping, magnificent EIGHT millimeters.  If you're ever in a situation where the difference is going to be those eight, the pen of the 85 is going to be iffy as well, thanks to the +/- 25% RNG.  Furthermore, as we all know, the APCR round has a pen nearly 30 mm higher than that of the 85.  Add to that a DPM that is 300 higher, and there's no good reason to use the 85.

Plus, the higher firing rate of the 57 means that it'll disrupt casting more often.

I like the 122 derp. Just aquired my 1st star on the barrel yesterday using nothing but the 122.
