85mm I'd say, its a nice flexible weapon, with the 122mm comes the temptation to fire HEAT at people and that can bounce like a bastard.  I was in my Excelsior fighting a KV-1 with the 122 and he was firing heat at me, how did I know? He kept bouncing, if he was firing HE he'd not have bounced.

Title says it all. I was thinking the 122mm, but the lack of penetration and accuracy makes me not want to get it. The 85mm seems to have only a few mm more penetration, but maybe it has better penetration at distance than the 57mm because of its heavier shell?

The 85mm is the most effective gun on it in almost all situations.

The 57mm is good in DPM, but it really lacks in penetration, even with gold, and you will be hard pressed to spend too much money trying to penetrate some tanks, or most at tier 7.

The 122mm is called a derp-gun, because it lobs low velocity explosive shells that are not designed to penetrate, but blow up on impact. If they go through, they do massive damage, if not, you won't get much from it. HE with it sucks, but HEAT has been nerfed so it's not as great as it used to be. Better off with the 85mm.

Sharlin, by the way, HEAT makes a distinctive HISSING sound as it hits your armor, and if it penetrates it leaves tiny holes. It's easy to tell.

85mm. The derp can be effective, usually always fun, but it's not nearly as consistent. I also harbor a little resentment for it since I had to grind my KV-1S with it for far too long. lol

Thank ye I did wonder what that was when I've heard it :)  And yeah that KV-1 was definately firing cHEAT at me, he bounced I think four times before he finally nailed me whilst I battered the buggery out of him in my Excelsior :)

85mm

1)Alpha matters in alot of situations (peek  a boom/shooting a target moving between cover/only get a chance to shoot a target for a couple seconds before it shoots back/finishing off a low hp target before they can shoot you)

2)HE shells that are useful (57mm HE shells are useless have 28 pen and only do 10 more damage then AP) The HE shells on the 85mm have 43 pen and do 280 damage which is enough to kill a flak bus with 1 lucky hit or at the rear of some mediums take out half of their hp.

The 57 is not a bad gun but does much better on a mobile platform like the t-34 that can flank and retreat when needed.

I used the 57mm for about 20 games grinding upto the 85mm and averaged about 550 damage per game then switched to the 85mm and by the time i stopped playing the kv1 i ended at 850 average damage per game.

The 57mm is great if you're top tier but really bad when you're bottom tier. If you put on a rammer with a 100% crew, the 85mm reloads in 4.2 secs. People will complain you'r a hacker killing them in 10 secs, but oh well. I played a lot of games with the derp. Does great damage to soft skin targets, but literally minimal damage to heavies. The HEAT just fizzles out on heavies too. Head to head, a KV1 with the 85mm will easily kill one with the 122mm. Unless you don't want to aim. Then the 122mm would be the way to go.

85 mm is the best all-round gun.  The 122 is too slow.  The 57 is great, but it is almost too fast as it reloads before you can aim.  Also, in my experience, really low alpha guns don't get any respect.  Now once in a while that's a good thing as people ignore you.  But more often, it means people will stick out and shoot you.  Hunt you down.  Return another shot your way.  Rather than run away or duck behind cover.  Giving you a free shot.  Plus, against any kind of moving target, you just won't get the chance to deal a lot of DPM with the 57.

So in the right situation, the 57 is great.  But overall, the 85 is the most popular for a reason.

While the derp is a solid choice, it is expensive and not very versatile(Although it helps you with higher tier games)

I recommend 85mm, it's what I keep on my KV-1(never selling it) if you know how to angle your armour and where to aim, the 85mm is a beast.

I know that it might just be me or the luck of the draw but I just finished the grind of the KV-1 to get the T-150 and time and time again I have tried to use the 85mm gun. Its just bounce after bounce with no pen, and always fails me when I need the shot made the most. Someone complained that they never get damage the shells are supposed to do and neither do I. I know it has to do with crew (mine are 100%), distance of the shot, and angle of the armor. I can never count for sure that the 85 will pen nor get the 160 damage but I have never had the derp fail to do some damage of at the least 100. The derp is horrible in reload speed but I can count on it for damage without firing gold rounds. I am working the T-150 now which starts with 2 tier 5 guns and the derp, it is so stupid to have 2 tier 5 guns on a tier 6 tank and you have to research again the same 85mm gun with just another name. I hope the 107mm gun is better when I get to it but until then I will stay with the guaranteed damage of the derp. My biggest problem started this week, fires onboard the KV-1 and the T-150. I played the KV-1 quite a bit and had no fires till about 3 days ago and now it seems every second game. Does somebody want us spending on fire extinguishers???

I run the 122 with HEAT, but if you're going to be shooting mostly standard ammo run the 85.

Personally I love the 57mm on my T-34. It's the type of gun for that type of machine. I'm sure it would do good on the KV-1 as well, but in this case I'd go for the 85mm. Just a better combo for a slow heavy. I think it needs the alpha to perform as a real heavy. With my T-34 I can get in and out after getting shots off. The KV is kind of stuck there. I'd like the 85mm for brawling, peek and boom.
