I have the M103 fully upgraded except for the top gun.  The gun costs 60k exp but moving up to the E5 is only 180k exp.  So the gun costs 1/3rd of the exp needed to move up to the E5 and end up with the best gun then anyway.

I have no intention of keeping the M103 once I get the E5.

So does the top gun speed up the amount of exp you bring in enough to be worth the additional grind, or should I just skip the upgrade and get the E5.

Thank you

Top gun on M103 is just like the one before, but almost every stat of it is optimized - better penetration, accuracy, etc.

With the top gun it's like a brand new tank, it becomes so much better.

I was in the same situation you are, when I was levelling up the M103 I didn't intend to keep it, but then I bought the top gun and it changed my mind.

You are playing a HT and one of the first upgrades wasn't the gun? that is the most important part of a heavy.

The difference is not so great, if you feel that you need it go for it.

There are two upgrades, I did the first which is close to the top gun in stats.  Then I upgraded the engine and turret because without the engine it was hard to maneuver and the turret had a much smaller cupola on top.  Plus I wasn't sure if the top gun needed the top turret and I didn't want to spend all that exp on best gun and not be able to use it.

So yeah, I'm playing a HT and I didn't max out the gun.  The upgrades I made resulted in the tank being much more competitive while adding the top gun first would give me a TD in a stock heavy chassis.

Yes. You will earn the xp faster. My friend upgraded to the top gun and he has sworn to never sell the thing. He hated it beforehand.

The top turret is virtually identical.

It is generally good advice to 100% upgrade every single component on your vehicle before moving to the next option.  Anything short of this means you are dulling the competitive edge of the vehicle before you finish it, which makes the grind potentially longer (sometimes it can actually shorten the grind by making the vehicle more competitive overall), but substantially more frustrating in the process as a guarantee for most upgrades that are skipped.

The only exception to this is with radio if you are above some arbitrary amount that lets you see across the map in most situations when signals are piggybacked off of upgraded vehicles.  There are valid reasons to skip that, but it's still worth upgrading in most cases regardless.

This is similar to people who skip the final engine on the T1/M6 because it's only used on those vehicles.  If you don't have the engine, the vehicle can't maneuver remotely well enough to compete at the tier (this was some 2 years ago when I last played, and I used these vehicles even longer ago when they fought next to KV-1s with the 152mm cannon, mind) and it just made the vehicle miserable because of it.

Always upgrade the vehicle's combat parameters to full regardless of the XP costs.  To skip upgrading it and moving to the next vehicle is to intentionally shoot yourself in the foot before moving onto the next one.

This is generally very good advice, particularly when moving up through tiers 6-9. However, on the M103 where you get the top gun for "free" when you unlock the E5, it's a trickier proposition. I did the grind without the top gun because getting that 60K XP back would have likely taken me another 30-45 games (?) being a slightly-above-average player, including doubles. That meant another month of wait and at the time I made the decision, clan wars was looming.

I had a pretty good win rate and decent (not great) average damage with the T9 gun. I haven't played the M103 much since, deciding to focus (poorly) on the E5. In the few games I've played with ther Tier 10 gun, I didn't notice a huge difference. The pen, reload, and aim time are all better, which reduces your exposure when taking shots, but they are only marginally better. In my opinion, the T9 gun is competitive and enough for the grind. That's not the case with every tank, so sometimes it's worth taking advantage of. That's how I came to my decision on the 103's gun.

Question to answer for yourself: How much longer will it take you to grind that 60K and will you enjoy doing it? (And how badly to you need/want the E5?)

M103 Top gun is it's shining feature...its why you drive the tank.  its got nothing else.  Good handling, but the gun.......without the gun your more then gimping yourself and idk why you would.

I dont know why the negs, the guy is not going to keep the M103, the pen is enough and the alpha doesnt change. YES it has a LOT better soft stats but is very expensive.
