Are there any tanks better then others for gaining XP?

Yes.  Artillery will always have the worst xp gain rates, and whatever tank you do best on will always earn more than other tanks.

More specifically, if you know the tank inside and out, you will do a lot better on it, whereas if you're terrible on it, your XP gain rates will reflect this trend.

I am significantly better on my T20 than my 3002 DB, as evidenced by its nearly 800 average XP rate, whereas the 3002DB only hit about 700.  My panther is only around 650, where my T23 is around 750.

This isn't because the american tanks are better, I just play them a lot better.

the gain is mostly balanced but as a general rule you will get more xp from higher tiered tanks. I have also noticed a good TD driver will get over double the kills a tank driver will get. Since survivability is also increased as such you would get much more xp in a tank destroyer.

I needed about 115k XP to get a GW Panther. Grinding in the Hummel looked no fun, so I used 4 scout tanks, and just kamikazed my way to that figure, and well beyond, in no time. Sure, my stats died a horrible death, but oh well.

Bigger gun == more damage inflicted == more XP.

In my experience, Tier 7-8 heavies with top guns researched do pretty well. Tier 5-6 heavies can also do well, but don't have as high a "ceiling" for average XP (i.e. with a T29, a good battle will definitely net me 1,000-1,200 XP; with a KV or a Churchill, a "good battle" will seldom go over 900 unless I luck out and kill some high-tiers).

Tier 6-8 mediums should also work fine - however, my concern is the HP differential. It takes more hits to kill a statistically average Tier 7-8 heavy than a Tier 7-8 medium, which means that even if you're using similarly-damaging guns - a heavy, if well-played, can live longer. But then, I haven't really played any Tier 7-8 mediums (just killed a bunch).

Also, as Onyx pointed out, everyone does better in some tanks vs. others. And even on the same tank, different setups (e.g. a 100mm vs. a 122mm) can produce different results.

Because XP is linked to damage done, guns that get more damage onto the enemy tank tend to net more XP.

Also, you can dominate a low-tier match, and because the targets have lower HP to start with, there's only so much XP you can wring out of them, and you'll get lower XP than an average game in the higher tiers.

(Example, I can get 6 killed and 6 damaged in a 15-5 win in my T57, and get crap for XP because the targets were all tier 2 lights and mediums.)

Which is why I'm thankful the matchmaker tosses me into high-tier battles. It's got the potential to get me a lot more xp/credits.

There is definitely a trade-off. You might not get many kills or much damage but you'll definitely get a decent amount of exp if you crank out 15 HE shots and hit with 13, for instance.
